detdesc::How you got started fly fishing? What were/are your strongest fly fishing Influences? What was your most memorable or first fly fishing experience?

My addiction began in my late teens. My two best friends were influenced by one of their fathers, and of course I wanted to join in on the fun. I would have never started fly fishing with them if I hadn't found my grandfathers old rod in our cottage's outhouse/shed. I was digging around for tools when I came across an Eagle Claw #7 fiberglass rod matched with a Pflueger Medalist reel. The line was cracked and worn and my home made leader of straight 8 lb mono did the trick my first few outings. I landed many fish using that before I knew better to move on to a more modern and practical outfit.

What do you like to fish now? Explain How?

Before moving to San Francisco from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan I spent most of my time fishing for trout. Mostly native brook trout within a few minutes of my house to browns and rainbows across the UP. I tried my luck at steelheading one season before finally landing some great lakes chrome in 2008. Now I spend my time fishing for just about anything as long as I'm out with rod in hand, yet trout are still my go to species to fish for.

What is your fantasy trip? What do you see in the future?

Currently, my fantasy trip is a week straight fishing my home waters in the UP.

Gear. What is your next purchase and why?

My next purchase... probably some tippet and meaty flies. Big ticket items include a Red Truck Premium 5/6 reel, a six weight, and a light trout rod choosing between a Scott G2 or Leland Sonoma Traveler.

What’s your favorite San Francisco spot? Why?

Non fishing related favorite San Francisco spot combines a few things and places. 21st Amendment Brewery beer, Nicks Crispy Tacos, and enjoying both on Baker Beach.

What music do you listen to when you hop in the truck and go fly fishing?

Back in the day, when I use to own a car the go to road tunes would be Tom Petty, the Wildflowers album especially in the woods, in a jeep, rods rigged up getting knocked about.

What’s your ultimate fly fishing travel rig? A lifted van? A Range Rover? An F-350? Why?

My ultimate fly fishing rig includes 4 wheels and a motor, if we're pushing it, make it a 4WD

detdesc::How you got started fly fishing? What were/are your strongest fly fishing Influences? What was your most memorable or first fly fishing experience?

I was blessed with a grandfather who was an avid fly angler. At the age of 4, I followed my grandfather about in the streams and lakes of California’s Sierra Nevada. In awe, I watched him cast flies to wary trout, and with my first trout on a fly, a life’s passion was born. My mentor gifted him with my very own fly rod at age seven and…the world has never been the same. Slowly, skills were honed and new waters were introduced: the Madison, the Yellowstone and Silver Creek. My fly fishing journey has since expanded to more exotic angling destinations. However, I've never forgotten the early years at my grandfather’s side casting flies for trout.

What do you like to fish now? Explain How?

My favorite fish to chase is the Pacific steelhead. There’s just something about this fish that is haunting…where it lives in the ocean, what it eats, why it grabs a swinging fly…I hope I never find out the answers to these questions. There’s no better way to chase a steelhead than on the swing. Elegant casts and smooth mends on broad rivers with traditional flies...yup. Every swing could be the one. When the tug finally comes, it’s always a surprise. Regardless of size, every wild steelhead is amazing to encounter.

What is your fantasy trip? What do you see in the future?

As a father of two young girls who already love to fish, I cannot wait for them to be old enough to join him on a true angling adventure. Whether in a drift boat on a trout river, or on the bow of a flats boat, it doesn’t matter to me. Sharing the sport of fly fishing and the sights and sounds that nature provides with my girls will be the ultimate.

Gear. What is your next purchase and why?

Always looking for something unique, I hope to acquire that “special” fly rod that cosmetically reminds me of the days on the water with my grandfather, but casts like a contemporary performance fly rod.

What’s your favorite San Francisco spot? Why?

Late summer on the San Francisco bay: At water level, the city’s sky line looks even more impressive. The Golden Gate Bridge stands guard as ocean-cooled fog snakes like thick waterfalls through the draws of the Marin Headlands. It’s a great sight.

What music do you listen to when you hop in the truck and go fly fishing?

Robert Earl Keen Jr., Pat Green, The Gourds, Wrinkle Neck Mules and Credence Clearwater Revival. Music from these artists and bands brings back good memories of road trips with friends, time on the water and laughs.

What’s your ultimate fly fishing travel rig? A lifted van? A Range Rover? An F-350? Why?

A Sportsmobile! Imagine a full-size, 4-wheel van with a 600 mile range, solar panels on the roof, a navigation system, all the amenities and enough fly gear to open a shop. It’s a mobile fly shop you can sleep in. Just need the “winning lotto” numbers and away we go!

Anything else we should know about you? School? Hometown? Other projects, interests, etc.?

I live in Marin, CA with my wife Linda, daughters Sophia and Siena, Yellow Lab named Jager Dog and a cat named Bella…which I like to describe as “my wife’s cat.”

detdesc::How to set up “The Hopper Dropper Rig” – or “The Dry Dropper Rig”

By George Revel

The Hopper Dropper Rig is easily one of my favorite and most productive rigs. This rig is my go to summertime creek and river rig. I have had great luck with hopper dropper rigs on the North Fork of the Yuba River, The Upper Sacramento River, The McCloud River, and The Truckee River.

The hopper does not always have to be a hopper just as long as it serves as both and indicator and an enticing meal. The dropper is generally a bead head nymph and size will depend on how buoyant your dry fly is.

My favorite flies for this set up are:

The Chubby Chernobyl for the dry

The Flashback Pheasant Tail for the nymph.

How to set up a hopper dropper rig:

1) Leader choice for the hopper dropper rig:

I start with a 7.5 foot 4x mono leader and loop to loop it to my fly line or butt section. I chose a shorter mono leader because it turns over the larger foam flies I like to fish with my hopper dropper rigs. Also mono leaders float.

How to tie a Hopper Dropper Rig Step 1

2) Choose your dry fly/Indicator for your hopper dropper rig:

The next step is to choose and tie on your dry fly for your hopper dropper rig.  You should base this on the size of dropper you want to fish. My favorite dry fly to use with a hopper dropper rig is the Chubby Chernobyl. Tie this on with a Clinch Knot.

How to tie a Hopper Dropper Rig Step 2

3) Attach fluorocarbon to the bend of the dry fly for your Hopper Dropper Rig:

Tie a section of 5 or 6x fluorocarbon on the bend of you dry fly with a clinch knot. The longer you make this section the deeper your dropper fly will sink. Keep in mind the longer this section is the more difficult the hopper dropper rig will be to cast. I like to keep it around 3 feet.

How to Tie a hopper dropper rig step 3

4) Choose and tie on your dropper fly:

I like to use a beadhead nymph that I have confidence in. Usually I end up using a pheasant tail, a prince nymph or a copper john.

How to Tie a hopper dropper rig step 4

5) Put some floatant and dry shake on the dry fly of your hopper dropper rig:

How to fish your hopper dropper rig:

I like to fish this hopper dropper rig in shallow riffles. The faster moving water gives the fish less time to inspect and just react. Another great method is to fish your way up stream, cast your hopper dropper rig in front of rocks allowing the hopper and dropper rig to flow around the rock and back toward you. As your hopper dropper rig is drifting back toward you lift your rod and strip in the slack.

SAGE XP Fly Rods

Since its inception in 1999, the Sage XP has become a classic rod design and has set the standard by which all fast action rods are measured. The guys at Sage really hit it on the nose with this rod, as the continuing popularity of the XP demonstrates. The hallmark of this rod is versatility. A fast action rod, it feels lively in the hand and generates tremendous line speed in a clutch.

However, this rod is not simply about distance and huge flies. Constructed with graphite IIIe, the XP is also sensitive enough to load at short distances easily, giving you close range control. Its soft tip provides accuracy when pinpointing the rise form of that sipping, selective brown on the last Baetis hatch of the season. If your casting stroke is compact and powerful, this rod will provide you with the proven performance of five years on the top of the fast-action market.

Smooth and retro but with a very modern touch! The ZXL Fly Fishing Rod by Sage is a pleasure to cast and a wonder to fish. Sounds like a lot of praise for a fly rod, doesnt it? Well, through the continuing MAGIC of G5graphite utilization, Sage has created a fly fishing rod that provides the freshwater fly angler every advantage needed to not only catch fish but also have a great time doing so. The G5 graphite placement allows the designers and engineers at Sage to create a smooth progressive tapered trout and small bass fly rod series that gives you the feeling of days gone by when the action of a trout fly rod was soft and they were a pleasure to cast.

Leland on the Sage Z-Axis Rod Series:
The Z-AXIS Fly Rod! Mr. Wizard is back and talk about pressure! You know the design team at Sage was sweating some serious bullets when they looked to replace the XP. For more than six years the XP Fly Rod Series was the industry standard by which fast action fly rods were measured, and now, it's been replaced. Enter the Z-Axis. We know you’re going to be completely awed by this Sage Fly Rod Series! These rods are lighter, and although they generate the fastest line speed of just about any rod, they're easier to cast (if that's possible) than the XP models. The added advantage of the extreme line speed is accuracy and control of your fly. And if you want to talk trackability...

Even though we now expect lightness Sure, we're simplifying the whole process, but we know when you first pick up one of these rods you will have the same reaction; WOW! You're going hear more clichés than you can shake a stick at (we couldn’t resist just one) about this rod series but just remember; if you want the from today’s fly rods, we never thought the Z-Axis' seemingly near-weightlessness could be achieved without giving up strength. Oh, how we were wrong! To bore you with a little technical talk, by replacing the glass hoop fibers (the fiberglass scrim cloth) with lighter, stronger graphite fibers, Sage found that during the curing process, the graphite fiber fabrics bind together more effectively. These now welded fibers give rise to a stronger fly rod blank and the lighter graphite fibers up the performance!lightest, most accurate fly rod on market, then reach for the Z-Axis. As Sage says it in one word “Magic”… and we couldn’t agree more.

Simms Women's GORE-TEX Waders

Simms Product Line Review

Simms Women's GORE-TEX Stockingfoot Wader Review

Most experienced fly anglers and fly fishing guides would acknowledge that Simms makes the highest quality waterproof/breathable fly fishing waders that you can buy. Simms is the only manufacturer of waders located within the United States. In fact, Simms is right in the heart of trout country, in Bozeman, Montana. Most folks are surprised, as I was, when they hear that all of the other wader brands on the market make their waders in the same two factories in China. Simms not only has the best designs, the latest materials, the best fit, and the highest quality control. Simms is the ONLY maker, to my knowledge, that water tests every single pair of waders that leaves their factory, so that you don’t have to ‘test’ them yourself the first time you enter the water.

There’s no reason a woman can’t love fly fishing as much as a man does, and, as such, she can demand as much (or more) from her equipment. But historically, women have gotten a raw deal, having to endure ill fitting men’s waders while pursuing their passion. Even Simms has admitted that by making multiple versions of women’s fishing waders in the past, at different price points, they were unable to fully address a comprehensive women’s size range due to the simple economics of supply and demand for the women-specific segment of the fly fishing market...

Simms StreamTread boots win Field & Stream award - For good reason

BOZEMAN, Montana – Simms Fishing Products introduced its line of StreamTread™ boots – the world’s first Vibram® soled wading boots. The StreamTread™ boots offer traction, grip and stability unparalleled in rubber-soled boots and give anglers an important tool in their fight against the spread of aquatic nuisance species.

In the March edition of Field & Stream, the Simms StreamTread wading boots are honored with a “Best of the Best” award. The award marks the seventh consecutive year Simms products have reaped kudos from magazine’s panel of fishing experts that test hundreds of items – from rods and reels to filet knives, jackets and electronics.

“Prestigious awards like the Field & Stream ‘Best of the Best’ help us confirm we’re on the right path with our StreamTread boots,” said Simms president K.C. Walsh. “Winning kudos is rewarding, but making products that change the culture of fly-fishing is even more important.”

Field & Stream noted that the unique Simms HardBite™ Star Cleats, designed to work exclusively on the StreamTread wading boots, provide superior in-stream traction. “These broad, flat, screw-in cleats are encrusted with carbide chips and recessed into the tread pattern; the result is a low-profile stud that gives a solid, metal-to-rock bite for better traction than plain felt soles on all surfaces, wet or dry,” wrote the Field & Stream editorial staff.

Field & Stream’s acclaims are echoed in the February/March issue of Gray’s Sporting Journal, where editor James R. Babb writes that Simms HardBite Star Cleats are “stellar performers all around, within a rounding error of studded felt in the river and vastly superior scrambling through the woods and in the surf.”

In both Field & Stream and Gray’s Sporting Journal, the Simms StreamTread wading boots are mentioned as part of anglers’ fight in the spread of aquatic nuisance species like didymo and New Zealand mud snails. Simms reminds anglers that Vibram-soled boots are not a cure-all and that anglers must check, clean, and dry all gear.

Simms Women's GORE-TEX Waders Honored in 'Best of the Best' By Field & Stream Magazine

Montana-based fishing brand makes elite list for sixth consecutive year

BOZEMAN, MONTANA (MARCH 6) – Simms's American-made Women’s Gore-Tex Stockingfoot Waders garnered an honorable mention award as Field & Stream Magazine unveiled its “Best of the Best” list of fly fishing products in the March issue.

The award marks the sixth consecutive year Simms products have reaped kudos from the panel of fishing experts that test hundreds of items – from rods and reels to filet knives, sinkers and electronics.

The waders took an honorable mention in the competitive “outerwear category” where three outstanding products were called out from a strong field of nominations for being unique, innovative and functional.

“We’re extremely proud Field & Stream is spotlighting these waders,” said K.C. Walsh, president of Simms. “Since we introduced our women’s fly fishing product line, we have strived to provide women with waders, outerwear, boots, and sportswear for a wide range of body types and fishing styles, utilizing the highest quality materials. We are pleased to have produced a wader that exceeds the standards of discerning field testers and veteran fishing journalists.”

Simms began offering women-specific line of waders in 1993 using input and feedback gleaned from serious female anglers and expanded the line with outerwear and sportswear.

The women’s line currently includes technical fishing shirts, a women-specific wading jacket, and women-specific wading boots that come equipped with Simms’s revolutionary StreamTread™ soles from Vibram®. The women’s waders have been redesigned slightly, with 13 sizes now available to fit women.

“Wader manufacturers have finally grasped the architectural differences between men and women,” wrote gear reviewer Ted Leeson in the Field & Stream “Best of the Best” piece. “This is all gear, no gimmick – tough Gore-Tex shell fabric, reinforced legs, and high-performance features.”

Simms has been awarded five “Best of the Best” top honors from Field & Stream: in 1998, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2008 for products that have included waders, jackets and travel bags.
