Leland Sonoma Traveler 8ft 5 Weight 4-piece Fly Fishing Outfit:

This is the outfit that Leland used on his days off!

Efficiency is the secret of any well-crafted fly cast. A balanced fly fishing outfit, like the Leland Sonoma Traveler, embodies this commitment. Our rod, reel and fly line compliment one another and amplify your body's movement, transferring your effort through the fly rod and into the fly line. The result are casts that celebrate our sport by providing you with controlled distance, accuracy and a subtle presentation, all with astonishing ease.

Our Leland Sonoma Traveler fly rod is designed to respond to the short, compact casting stroke we teach in our Leland Method casting classes. The five weight Sonoma Traveler will help you cast any trout fly with astonishing accuracy and efficiency. This eight footer tracks true, is balanced in hand, and will make you a better caster by rewarding the right stroke with brilliant results. Designed as the ideal beginner's rod, this portable four-piecer ended up as one of the finest dry fly rods we've ever cast.

Adorned with our special Leland grip, the Sonoma Traveler fly rod literally fits like a glove into your hand, adding intimacy that other fly rods often lack. Our intuitive grip provides you with added purchase and control of our already well-balanced fly rod. This rod is truly and extension of your body. Of course it's finished with all the right components, including a highly-figured wood insert on our double-uplocking, anodized reel seat. Our non-glare blank finish combined with and our darkened guide set provides a stealthy approach when on the water.

Fly lines too often are a secondary consideration. Not with us at Leland. We searched and tested high and low for the perfect fly line. Our goal was to find a fly line that combines casting efficiency with fishing function. We did our job. Our Leland weight forward, five-weight floating fly line casts like butter and floats like a cork and very noticeably compliments the efficient taper of our Leland Sonoma Traveler fly rod.

To store the perfect fly line, we obviously needed a fly reel. Again, we worked hard to design a fly reel that balanced correctly with our fly rod, both physically and aesthetically. The Leland Classic Trout fly reel is the answer. When combined with the Leland Traveler fly rod and our fly line, the whole is much greater than the sum of parts. With an adjustable and proven click and pawl drag system, this fly reel nods to the great fly reels of the past, while employing better contemporary materials and manufacturing process, ensuring a fly reel that will last a lifetime. Your grandfather would approve of this reel's quality and he'd certainly approve of the celebratory sound it makes when your fish heads downstream.

Finally, you can store your Leland Sonoma Traveler fly fishing outfit handily in our nylon-covered rod tube. With its integrated, padded reel pouch, you can leave your Leland Classic Trout fly reel mounted proudly on your favorite trout rod for easy storage and more importantly, quick rigging when it's time to hit the water.

detdesc::Leland Sonoma Trout Fly Fishing Outfit 8' 5wt:

This is the outfit that our instructors use to teach casting classes at the Leland Ranch!

Designed to be the best fly rod to use when learning how to fly cast, it's also the perfect outfit for most anglers, as they head for the hills to fish smaller streams for trout.  It will make fans of experienced casters as well, packaged in a cordura tube with a Leland Classic Trout fly reel and a proprietary fly line that aids casting and fishing. This outfit is impossible to beat.

To go with our Sonoma rods, we wanted a reel that was affordable, durable, and classic in appearance. In the Leland Classic Trout, we've used anodized, machined aluminum, proven click-pawl drag system, and quick, easy spool interchange to produce a reel that's as cosmetically beautiful as it is mechanically sound.

With an easy-casting weight forward taper, our fly line turns over fly and leader well and loads the rod appropriately at both close and intermediate distances. At our Sonoma Ranch, and across the fly waters of Northern California, we’ve seen how this line casts and mends exceptionally well, and helps new and returning fly anglers put the fly where it needs to be.

Also included in this outfit are fly line backing and a cordura rod/reel case. We will rig this outfit for you to the Leland Standard, wherein all connections between the leader, fly line, fly line backing, and fly reel will be assembled and tested to the greatest strength and reliability before arriving at your door, ready to fish, right out of the box.

detdesc::At Leland Rod Co., we are obsessed with only one thing, the "master cast."

For over thirty years, we've mentored thousands of fly fishers who aspire to master cast on our 13 acre Fly Casting Ranch in Sonoma, California. Our facility is solely dedicated to the ultimate fly cast and now we offer the crescendo of our commitment to the cast in the form of our library of Leland Rod Co. balanced outfits.

Every product designer behind Leland Rod Co. is a F.F.F. (Fly Fishing Federation) Master Certified Casting Instructor.  Simply put, we are students of the defining attribute of the sport of fly fishing, the cast.  The pinnacle of fly casting is the master cast and every balanced fly fishing outfit we design embodies our commitment to this belief.

It's the proper balance of ingredients that makes anything worth the effort and worthy of existence. Take our Leland fly rods for example, we don’t tout the latest materials as “game changers,” nor do we run to the trough of technology for a new gimmick to market. Instead, we research, design, tinker, revise, test and even abuse our work. If newer materials allow our fly rods to cast more efficiently and with better balance, we use them. If they don't improve our fly rod's casting pleasure, we pass. Only when a Leland Rod Co. rod provides master casts, do we put our mark on it.

Beyond master casting pleasure, we also wanted our Leland fly rods and reels to look like fly tackle should, as though you discovered it in your great uncle's dusty garage. We like rich, figured wood fitted smartly to darkened nickel silver hardware. We respect tight thread wraps, clean epoxy work and dense, high-grade cork handles as well as machine-cut metals. In essence, we craft our fly rods and fly reels in the hopes to one day receive a quiet, approving nod from your grandfather.

If you yearn for something more, if you feel blessed for every minute you spend by the water celebrating the cast, if you desire to earn your fish with a master cast, not just catch it...a Leland Rod Co. balanced outfit is probably in your future.

What is Fly Casting?    How to Fly Cast.    Learn to Fly Cast.

Leland's Nature Boy Lanyard - Loaded

Specifications:

Color: Olive Green / Leland Red
Material: 550 USA paracord
Included: Clipper, zinger, clamps, Tippet T
Snaps: 5

Made in USA

March 21, 2014 (Sonoma, CA):  Always on the hunt to make fly fishing more enjoyable, Leland has teamed up with Nature Boy Designs to offer a US made lanyard that comes complete with all the necessary stream side tools that fly anglers rely on. Each smartly-designed, handmade lanyard comes ready to fish, including a clipper, forceps, zinger and tippet T (for your tippet spools). A few extra snap swivels allow the angler to customize the set up. Now all your necessary fly fishing tools are easily within reach. It's perfect for that late evening hatch, just grab a fly box and you're good to go.  Leland's Nature Boy Lanyard - Loaded.

Vest, What Vest?: The Iconic fly fishing vest is still available for the few holdouts in our sport, but today most anglers prefer a shoulder or chest pack. Packs work well for storing fly boxes, leader and such, but accessing the tools we anglers use all day presents a challenge if you must open your pack each time. Leland's Nature Boy Lanyard keeps the commonly used equipment right in reach...all day long. That's smart fishing and at Leland...we like it that way.

Get Customized: Let's face it, we're all different. We come in different sizes. Some of use are left handed...others right. No problem, Leland's Nature Boy Lanyard is fully adjustable for a custom fit. You're angling necessities will be right where you want them. You can even move your tools about the lanyard with the provided snap swivels. Heck, there's even a few extra, should you desire to add more items. You can even mount your lanyard directly to your waders if you wish.

Safety First: You might ask if it's safe to hang a loop of super strong paracord around your neck. At Leland, we asked the same. The good news is that Leland's Nature Boy Lanyard has your safety in mind. Each lanyard comes with a quick release connection. In the rare event you get hung up, the release will do its job and you'll be around to fish another day.

Pro Review - Leland's Carrie Roche

As a woman angler, I have gone back and forth between vests and packs. Most of the time they just don't fit all that well, and I find myself digging and looking in each and every pocket to find my tippet or clipper.

I fish Montana with my Dad each year and this lanyard really works well on our Big Horn floats. I love that everything is right there in front of me for easy access. I can even attach it directly to the shoulder straps on my waders. It allows me to jump in and out of the boat when necessary, yet I still have the right tools for rigging and releasing fish. Did I mention it comes complete with everything you need for a day on the water? It even comes with extra snap swivels so you can add more "essentials" if you wish.

I even wear this same Leland Nature Boy Lanyard when instructing here at the Leland ranch. It makes it so easy when fixing knotted leaders and quickly re-rigging. It's also great for demonstrating how to use the necessary tools when helping a newer angler. It's just simple and come to find...simple really works.

Beyond function, I really like the look and color scheme of the lanyard as well. The fact that each and every lanyard is hand made, right here in the USA by Nature Boy Designs, also adds to the flavor of this smartly-designed item. I recommend it to all my fly fishing friends. If you're tired of fumbling for your essential stream-side tools and tippet when fly fishing, you really will love the Leland Nature Boy Lanyard.

Leland Fly Fishing Outfitters
Company Profile

Leland Fly Fishing Outfitters is a designer, procurer and online seller of Fly Fishing equipment and apparel that was founded in San Francisco in 1985 and is named after the grandfather of its owner Josh Leland Frazier, who bought the company in 1999.

Leland Fly Fishing Ranch along Highway 121 in southern Sonoma County is the company’s new home.  It is a work in progress established to provide a place where our expert team and customers can come together to share a knowledge of and passion for fly fishing—how to do it, where to do it, and most importantly why.

At Leland, we understand and celebrate fly-fishing as a gateway to other truths, about nature, humankind’s connection to it and our intended role as stewards, lest what has been created be lost for evermore.  Rivers need friends, we say, and fly-fishing creates these friends.

Leland Fly Fishing Outfitters and Ranch exists to foster that ethic.  Where the big box and chain retailers push every product under the sun and the objective is just sales, our approach is guidance and instruction.  We understand that fly-fishing is a sport best promoted through mentoring.

To that end, we procure and sell elite, expertly crafted fly-fishing gear that isn’t complicated and that we actually use.  And we put just as much energy and effort into creating encouraging opportunities to learn—through in person instruction and online instructional articles and videos intended to demystify the sport, build confidence and create anglers.

We are the modern version of the old fly-fishing specialty shops that once existed to share knowledge of fly-fishing and passion for the environment.  At Leland, our vision is this: hook an angler, who will one day share the sport with a daughter or son, creating new generations of angler-environmentalists, one person at a time.

Leland Fly Fishing Ranch
FAQ

What is Leland Fly Fishing Outfitters?

Leland Fly Fishing Outfitters is an online fly-fishing equipment and apparel retailer founded in San Francisco in 1985 and named after the grandfather of its owner Josh Leland Frazier, who bought the company in 1999.

What is Leland Fly Fishing Ranch?

Leland Fly Fishing Ranch is the outfitting company’s new home and is being established to provide a place where customers and fly-fishing enthusiasts can come together to share knowledge of and passion for the sport they love.

Does county zoning law allow for a business like Leland?

Yes. Leland Ranch at 24120 Arnold Drive is zoned limited commercial, within which neighborhood retail and organized instruction are both authorized uses.

What is the subject of Leland’s Board of Zoning Adjustment hearing?

The Board of Zoning Adjustment will consider and vote on final permits for completion of Leland Ranch and conditions under which it may be operated.

Why did Sonoma Valley Airport oppose permit approvals for Leland Ranch?

The airport and aviation regulators raised concerns that the presence of ponds on neighboring Leland Ranch would attract birds to the area and increase the risk of aviation accidents due to bird strikes.

Does Leland increase the risk of bird strikes for Sonoma Valley Airport pilots?

No.  Leland Ranch is no longer proposing development of wildlife habitat—which was the initial point of concern.  The company also has instituted landscaping and grounds-keeping practices—such as maintaining shorelines devoid of vegetation—and taken a host of other proven measures to deter waterfowl and other bird life from being attracted to the property.  In sum, the property and its operations in now way are added attraction to birds beyond a pond on the airport’s own property which is maintained without any landscaping or grounds-keeping practices intended to deter waterfowl and other bird life.

Why should I care if Leland Fly Fishing Ranch receives final permits and approvals form the county Board of Zoning Adjustment?

There are many but here is one overriding good reason.  Fly-fishing is a gateway to environmentalism.  It teaches values of conservation and ecology.   Rivers need friends, and fly-fishing creates these friends.  With each new person hooked on fly-fishing, another environmentalist is born.

October 13, 2011 (San Francisco, CA): Ask the legendary Göran Andersson about his signature series of Loop fly rods, and he'll talk to you as an artist or composer would about their finest work. Fishing one produces a kind of harmony between angler and environment made possible when the right rod—like a finely tuned instrument—sharpens the experience and transforms instincts into effortless, intuitive casts. Meet the father of modern fly tackle and experience the first production fly rods to bear his name: Goran Andersson.

The Rodmaker's Rod: This is not a fly rod that's a year or two in the making, it's the culmination of sixty years of Göran Andersson's expertise distilled into an unprecedented rod taper, constructed from the latest materials, and available to everyone who appreciates the power of the right tool. The son of a Swedish fly fisherman and rodmaker, Göran Andersson started tailoring fly lines at age eight and began building his own fly rods soon after. That passion would become his life's work, devoting himself to the art of the cast and tools to constantly better his techniques. Despite developing rod designs for the world's leading manufacturers, pioneering the underhand cast, and contributing immeasurable insight into the sport of fly fishing, this is the first series of fly rods to feature his name. Why? Because Andersson's Signature Series Fly Rods are not simply another of his cutting-edge creations, they are the fly rods he brings with him to fish the world's blue-ribbon waters. Delivering the precision, accuracy, power and finesse that a man of Andersson's ability demands, Loop's Göran Andersson Signature Series is a crowning achievement in fly rod design

Series Overview...

Form & Function:
Too often in today's fly rod market does technology take precedent over performance. Loop remains steadfast in their commitment to innovation with a purpose, and their Göran Andersson Fly Rods are constructed around a fundamental commitment to line control and an uninterrupted, efficient transfer of energy through the blank. The engine for this efficiency lies in the Andersson Series' unique taper and action: to label it a moderate-fast action is too vague, and the term deep-flexing is often misunderstood. A more apt description is a responsive or enhanced-fast action, where the quick-firing accuracy of a fast action tip combines with a high modulus, graphite butt that flexes enough to load the rod in perfect balance. The result is butter smooth casting and absolute control over the trajectory of your line, allowing you to redirect and adjust your cast in the air. That means your cast isn't over until your fly hits the water, extending your control over every square inch of the river.

This total command of a river is synonymous with Goran's signature underhand cast, a technique that allows him to access every spot no matter how limited the backcast room. The Andersson Signature Series is the most effective rod for underhand casting, loading well from the water and opening up stretches of river that others simply can't fish. That being said, the action lends itself to traditional overhead casts and anglers both novice and expert alike.

The Lineup...

Loop Göran Andersson Signature Series are available in single and double-hand models, each satisfying a particular application and all possessing a proud place in Andersson's quiver. Featuring an understated gray finish and crimson ferrel wraps, the look is uniquely Loop and entirely sophisticated. The Goran Andersson Single Hand Series are available in two models: the 9'4" #4 is a great all-around trout rod, and the 10' #7 is an exceptional single-hand rod for steelhead or Loop's coveted Atlantic Salmon.

The double-hand lineup offers a more extensive selection of lengths and weights, in keeping with Göran Andersson's reputation as the preeminent two-handed caster and father of the underhand cast. The 12' #6 is ideal for summer steelhead and tailwater trout, extending your reach across the river. The GA Signature Series 14' #8 is a serious tool for stellar salmon and steelhead fishing, delivering an extraordinary command over every square inch of water without comprising sensitivity. Both the 11'6" and 12'6" #9's are also ideal for salmon and steelies, with the latter being Andersson's preferred fly rod for Atlantic salmon and sea trout. Then there's the monster of the bunch: the 14'6" #10, built for vast rivers, huge mends and unforgettable fish.

Regardless of the model, all of the Loop Göran Andersson Signature Series Fly Rods are all groundbreaking, effectively eliminating any disconnect between fly and fisher and delivering seamless, spot-on casts. Serene waters deserve superb gear, and the Loop Göran Andersson Fly Rods celebrate the pleasure of fishing time well spent.

Loop Göran Andersson Fly Rods - Pro Review by Leland's Ben Paull

What's the Word...

Casting a Göran Andersson Signature Series Fly Rod alone is fun, but alongside the man himself, it's a rare opportunity to experience a world-class rod with its distinguished designer. We spent the afternoon casting Andersson's Signature Series Fly Rods at the Leland Ranch in Sonoma, and both the single and double-handers proved to be unlike anything else on the market. Delivering a dynamic action and acute line control, they are the embodiment of Loop's functional innovation.

Action...

The action of Loop's Göran Andersson Signature Series is difficult to classify. It manages to have a sensitivity that permeates the whole rod without compromising power or contributing to a soft, sloppy action. At the same time, it remains fast and accurate in the tip like a traditional fast action rod. The result is a rod that loads well off the water when you're underhand casting and also performs well with traditional, overhead casts. Don't let the idea of a deep flexing action mislead you: Göran Andersson Signature Series Fly Rods are far from your full flexing rod of yesteryear, instead proving to be a contemporary, innovative action meant for a diversity of styles.

Fit and Finish...

Like everything Loop, the Göran Andersson Signature Series Fly Rods deliver on aesthetics. The deep gray finish and and aluminum reel seat are sleek, and the crimson wraps contribute a nice bit of color to a great looking rod. The triangle reel seat is certainly new-school, but the overall impact is classic and, much like Göran, concerned with function over flash. In all the rod looks as good as it feels, and the Portuguese cork and ceramic stripping guides are always a nice touch.

Run Down...

Pros:
When one of the greatest casters ever develops a rod for his favorite fly fishing destinations, chances are the results are going to be impressive.

Cons: The unique action is different, and that means it isn't easy to classify. But for anyone who wants to broaden their game, these rods are a great excuse to try something new.

Bottom Line: The Göran Andersson Signature Series Fly Rods are fun, efficient, and different from anything we've fished. Between the unique action, effortless casting, and timeless design, they're great rods and another example of Loop's comprehensive approach to tackle.

About Leland Fly Fishing Outfitters

Leland Fly Fishing Outfitters is a full-service fly shop that has provided anglers in the San Francisco Bay Area with top quality gear and education since 1985. As we continue to serve Bay Area anglers from our Sonoma Ranch, the Internet has given us the chance to extend our service to fly anglers across the planet, and that's an opportunity and privilege we're excited to have.

Who is Leland Frazier?

Leland is the grandfather I never met. Unfortunately he passed away before I was born, but through bed-time stories told by my father, his life, and most memorably his passion for fly fishing, were carried forward. A man whose face I only knew from black and white photos taken along the Owens River was slowly becoming a legend in my mind. As I grew older and came to understand that fly fishing was more than just a pastime, these photos and stories began to resonate. Sadly, I thought fly fishing was a mystery whose complexity and history had to be learned from a sage like my grandfather, a man who now only lived in lore and legend like the sport itself.

While conventional fishing with my father on the banks of the San Joaquin each summer, I watched the wielders of long rods paint the water with their colored lines and dry flies. These fly fishermen were free to search every corner of the stream for the colorful, native trout. I feared this type of angling freedom was not available to me. Driven by the legacy of my grandfather and images of these "free" fly fishers, I challenged my apprehension and picked up a fly rod.

Twenty years later I named my retail fly fishing business after this angling legend, Leland Frazier. This was an obvious and easy decision, as it was he who led me to fly fishing and his memory that lent me the courage to return to the river after those challenging days when I caught more trees on my back cast than fish on my forward cast.

It's probably true that with Leland by my side it would have been easier to cover the water with my fly line and dry flies. I worked very hard to become a fly fisherman by reading, fishing, researching, and cornering anyone who knew anything about the sport. It was a long road, but I learned that with hard work, fly fishing, like anything in life, is attainable.

We at Leland Fly Fishing Outfitters want to make it easy for you to become a fly fisher, as easy as if a wise grandfather were at your side every step of the way. I welcome and encourage you to let fly fishing connect you to your proud history, create history of your own, or perhaps give you the opportunity to fill your grandchildren with the same wonder, possibility, focus, and joy that Leland gives to me.

– Josh Leland Frazier, Leland Fly Fishing Outfitters

detdesc::How you got started fly fishing? What were/are your strongest fly fishing Influences? What was your most memorable or first fly fishing experience?

My first introduction to the art of fly fishing was my grandfather’s hand tied flies. Although we never ‘fly’ fished together, I remember his straw work hats adorned with his latest craft. It was my father who first took me fly fishing. I am the youngest of three daughters and became his fishing buddy by default. I can remember conventional fishing for big fish in small ponds when I was a child, but it was over ten years ago when we floated the middle-fork of the Salmon that I realized there was no greater reward than catching a fish on a fly.

What do you like to fish now? Explain How?

Now I like to fish whenever I can sneak away. This means an early evening on the Big Wood River while visiting family in Ketchum Idaho, or a morning on the flats boat casting to Bonefish while visiting family in the Florida Keys. Once our daughters are old enough to come along, I know I’ll find myself back on the water more often.

What is your fantasy trip? What do you see in the future?

I have many fantasy trips and fishing destinations I’d like to fit in, but one place I dream about getting back to, sooner than later, is New Zealand. Nine months after Josh and I met we traveled to NZ together, and fished all but three days during our three week stay. There’s truly nothing like flying in a helicopter to reach a fishing destination in the most dramatic of settings. It was on this same trip when Josh proposed… I guess I passed the test! New Zealand’s challenging sight fishing, makes it all the more rewarding.

Gear. What is your next purchase and why?

My next purchase is a rod from the new Leland Rod Company. I can’t wait to get my hands on the most well designed rod out there!

What’s your favorite San Francisco spot? Why?

My favorite San Francisco spot is Chrissy Field, down at the beach under the Golden Gate Bridge. Whether we’re picnicking, taking a walk, flying a kite, running the dogs, or simply watching the kite surfers … I continually have to pinch myself. How could we be so lucky to live within blocks of this beach with the Marin Headland’s in the background and iconic bridge in the foreground?

What music do you listen to when you hop in the truck and go fly fishing?

A dusty old Willie Nelson ‘tape’ that sits in the tape deck of our old truck. Truth is, it reminds me of long road trips with my family back in the day, in addition to road trips to the Sierra with Josh and Lillie, before we added two kids and another dog to the pack.

What’s your ultimate fly fishing travel rig? A lifted van? A Range Rover? An F-350? Why?

My ultimate travel rig is parked up at the Ranch in Sonoma. The old Tundra and our 16’ Airstream Bambi. The Airstream is designed to a T with all the modern amenities, and reminds me of staying in finest boutique hotel. The best part is you can drive it down any dirt road and tuck it in alongside the smallest of streams.

Anything else we should know about you? School? Hometown? Other projects, interests, etc.?

I grew up outside of Cleveland OH and went to Penn State University. After graduating in ’97, I moved to London, England and worked to travel all over Europe. I returned to the States and found myself in New York City. After almost three years working in website production I decided to pursue my passion for architecture and design and moved to San Francisco to attend the Academy of Art University. Shortly after graduating I started my own business and have enjoyed designing for both residential and commercial clients. The biggest and most rewarding project I’ve taken on is raising our two little girls, now three and just over one.
