Common Patterns

Gummi Minnow

Other innovative epoxied baitfish patterns

Leland on Wapsi Gummi Flash Foil

The Gummi Minnow is a relative newbie in the fly tying and fly fishing world. Many fly tying and fishing purists out there have been enraged by this tiny silicone baitfish imitation. These old school fly anglers probably think the Gummi Minnow looks more like an arts and crafts project or a clear Swedish Fish with a hook jammed in it than a fly. But, it works, and it works like you wouldn't believe! From casting to pompano and jack on the beaches of Cabo to wrestling baby tarpon out of the mangroves of Campeche with your new Sage Bass Rod or chasing bonefish across the flats at Los Roques, the Gummi Minnow has rapidly become a fly you really ought to have in your fly box. This little bugger looks and swims like the real thing and offers a killer imitation of a wide range of common baitfish. Like it or not, the Gummi Minnow is here to stay and probably worth learning to tie proficiently.

Leland on Wapsi

Wapsi may be a relative newcomer to the fly tying thread market, but it is no stranger to the fly tying world. A company known for its unflagging pursuit of providing the fly tying community with materials of exceptional quality, Wapsi has been in the business of inspiring fly tyers throughout North America - and now the world - to produce the very best and most useful flies possible. In 1945 when Lacey Gee started a small fly tying material business based in Iowa it may have seemed a stretch that the company would eventually require a 62,000 square foot warehouse for its products. That may have been a stretch of the imagination, but today it's reality. Over the years, Wapsi has participated in such innovations as foam popper bodies, grizzly marabou, and hour glass eyes. The innovation continues with Wapsi's line of UTC threads and wire, the first range of fly tying thread and wire based on denier. Choose Wapsi and wrap your flies with the very best.

Wapsi on Gummi Flash Foil

"Designed to be used with our Gummi Body. It can also be used on setting epoxy flies. Great with all foam products when applied with Super 77 adhesive. Instructions included."

Wapsi on Wapsi

"In 1945, Lacey Gee of Independence, Iowa began a fly tying business. With some financial help and encouragement from the owner of Wapsi Produce Company, Lacey established the Wapsi Fly Company. Previously, he had been employed by the poultry processing plant, which provided a ready source of feathers. That, along with incentive, imagination and a good deal of skill in fly tying, became the basis for his new business. The name, "Wapsi," was a natural, as the buildings housing it were located on the banks of the Wapsipinicon River. The first few years were a near break-even proposition with most flies going to individuals and small accounts. Profits came largely from the sale of thousands of rooster necks to two eastern distributors.

By the late 1940's, business was looking up. No longer were there sales to individuals. Approximately 16 women tied full time for several wholesale accounts. They produced better than 15,000 flies per week. The flies accounted for about 1/3 of the business. Packaged materials and bulk feathers made up the balance.

Over the years, Wapsi has introduced many fly tying products: Lead Eyes, Wooly Bugger Marabou, Dyed Grizzly Marabou, Soft Tanned Rabbit Skins, Dyed Pheasant Skins, Mylar Cord, three sizes of Ultra Chenille, Razor Foam, Thin Skin, Foam Popper Bodies, Fly Tails, Sili Legs, and Hour Glass Eyes. Such high quality dubbings as Camel, Antron, Angora Goat and Superfine are all processed at Wapsi. Premo Deer Hair, Lead Free Wire and Lead Free Eyes are also Wapsi firsts.

Today, Wapsi fills 62,000 square feet with plans to continue expansion. Wapsi is pleased to be a part of a growing industry where we can count our competitors as friends.

We are proud of all of these accomplishments and plan to continue working hard to bring quality materials and ideas to fly tyers. You are our inspiration and motivation."

Leland on Dubbing
Dubbing is generally used by fly tyers to create the textured and tapered bodies of both dry flies and nymph patterns. The term "dubbing" actually refers to a tying technique whereby the tyer attaches loose material to a strand of thread, using that thread to build the body of the fly. Tyers refer to both the technique and the material used as dubbing. Most dubbing material is natural, but synthetic and synthetic-natural blends are also available. Take note of the properties of the dubbing you select. Different textures of dubbing material may add extra movement to your fly when it gets wet and hangs in the current while others of smoother texture will not produce the ragged look you may be after.

Leland on Crystal Splash

The artful incorporation of flashy material is extremely important when tying artificial flies. Fish are often keenly aware of glittery, flashy objects and this is no secret to fly anglers and fly tyers. This d'esn't mean, however, that tossing a bound wad of shredded tinfoil into your favorite pool or into the skinny water of that picturesque saltwater flat will turn up the results you're after! Spirit River's Crystal Splash is easy to manipulate and will add just enough subtle flash and pearly sheen to your flies to have those wily fish lining up for your offering. Tie in some of this excellent material and get ready to hear your reel scream!

Leland on Flash Material

This material is designed for times when tyers want to "kick it up a notch." It is available in many colors and reflective grades. Tying some flashabou or other Mylar reflective material to a fly will increase its attractive quality and draw the interest of more fish, especially in low light situations and darker, deeper, murkier water. It is more common to find flash and reflective material in streamer patterns and nymph recipes, but it can also be a useful highlight to the wings of a dry fly, especially in the extra-fine diameters.
