detdesc::Getting the Most from your Simms Fly Fishing Jackets, Waders, and Layering

As seasoned outdoor enthusiasts know, having a good layering ensemble can make all the difference when spending time in challenging outdoor environments.

1. The Baselayer

The first piece of a good layering set-up is, of course, the baselayer. Worn against your skin, the best baselayers are made from synthetic materials or wool -- materials that wick perspiration from your skin, yet will hold heat when damp or wet. Under no circumstances should you wear cotton next to your skin when heading out on the water -- cotton dries slowly and will not insulate when wet. Our favorite baselayer top is the Simms DownUnder Merino Top, and our favorite baselayer bottoms have to be the Simms DownUnder Merino Bottoms. They wick rapidly, dry fast, help regulate your core temperature, and stay naturally odor-free, even on long fishing trips.

2. The Midlayer

The second important type of layer is insulation, which can come in a couple forms. Insulating pieces are either sweater-type garments, like the Simms Rivershed Cardigan, or midlayer underwear pieces, like the Simms Guide Fleece Top. Depending upon your activity output and weather conditions, you may wear one or more midlayer insulation pieces. In cold fishing conditions, like late fall in British Columbia, you'll want to wear additional insulation on your lower body. For this, consider the Simms Guide Fleece Bib or the Simms Guide Fleece Pant.

3. The Shell

The third type of critical layer is a shell. Nearly all anglers will at some point need to pick up a hardshell, a completely waterproof outer layer like the Simms Guide Jacket. Built of waterproof-breathable GORE-TEX material, this impregnable jacket enables you to fish through a downpour and stay dry. For stashable, lighter weight rain protection, consider the Simms GORE-TEX PacLite Jacket. Other outer layers, called softshells, are not waterproof, but provide wind protection and water resistance in a soft and stretchy package. Simms jackets like the Simms Windstopper Softshell Jacket are the ideal outer layer in anything less than a driving rain.
