January 24, 2014 (Sonoma, CA):  Loop doesn't claim that the Multi Series are “the greatest fly rods ever made,” they're just great rods. They aren't the “lightest rods on the planet,” because balanced casts and your reel/line selection are more important than weight. The Multi Series is proof that quality fly rods don't need to cost upwards of $500, and they're everything you'd expect from a Swedish brand dedicated to building premium tackle.

Casting above all else: If you're like us, you care more about how much fun a rod is rather than how high-modulus its blank is. Loop puts this emphasis on casting above all else. Designed to deliver solid line control and hold up in tough conditions, the Multi Series has the kind of components you expect from rods twice the price. And with two featured models, the 590-4 Trout and 696-4 Streamer, it's the ideal trout option for anyone looking to upgrade an old rod or add something new to their arsenal.

The 590-4 (Trout): For a great all-around trout rod, it goes without saying that the 9ft 5wt is king. The Multi 590-4 is an excellent option that's versatile and easy to cast, making it ideal for a range of techniques and skill levels. Your buddy is getting into trout fishing? Here's his answer. You want a backup rod for an upcoming trip? The Multi 590-4 is it. If you want to cover just about any type of water, and you'd rather spend extra on flies or a sturdy reel, then take advantage of this offer from Leland and Loop. Limited quantities for a limited time, so pick one up in time for next season.

Recommended Fly LineLeland New Zealand, 5wt

The 696-4 (Streamer): This is a great rod with a ton of power, perfect for anyone who wants a dedicated streamer rod. At 9ft 6in, the added length gives you plenty of coverage and lifting power for large trout. The review below has a good rundown of its on-the-water performance, but suffice to say it makes easy work of streamer fishing. Loop rods have always been designed for going after huge trout (these guys pioneered Jurassic Lake) and the Multi 696-4 is a part of this legacy.
Recommended Fly LineAirflo Mend, 6wt

The Rundown: If you're in the market for a great rod, be it because you need to upgrade or you want another trout setup in you gear cache, go for the Multi Series. They are built to be solid and fun, and that's ultimately what we look for in the gear that we recommend.

Loop 696-4 Pro Review - Leland's Burke White

California's Lower Truckee River flows from the famous Tahoe Lake. It winds it's way though beautiful alpine country, passes through the quaint mountain town of Truckee and then bends eastward. Unlike most Sierra Nevada streams, the Truckee River never meets the Pacific Ocean. Instead, it heads inland, eventually feeding into Nevada's Pyramid Lake. It's a pretty western river and it's full of trophy trout...but they don't come easy.

It was on this river, that I had the chance to test out Loop Tackle's Multi 696-4 fly rod. That might sound like a larger fly rod for your standard-sized trout stream, but I had a plan in mind. Knowing that really big brown trout hold in these waters and also knowing that there's a healthy population of crawfish in this watershed, I was going streamer fishing.

I tied up some heavy-duty, rusty brown crawfish patterns with barbell eyes. I even added some rabbit strips to mimic the claws of the crawfish. This fly would be the only pattern I would fish this day. To efficiently deliver this heavier fly, I need a fly line with more mass. I chose the new Airflo Mend in a six weight. You might think I would fish a sinking tip line, but most of the clear water runs on the Truckee are not that deep and if a big brown trout wanted my fly...he'd happily move toward it.

To keep things simple, I used the Loop Multi fly reel (6-9) to compliment this outfit. Might sound like a pretty big reel to put on a six weight, but I chose it for two reasons: The reel's extra weight would counter-balance the extra length of this rod, providing improved balance for a long day of casting. Also, this larger reel would give me extra line capacity, should I need it on a big brown trout.

Here's an important factoid related to crawfish. They have an exoskeleton (a hard outer shell). As these critters grown, they shed or molt their entire exoskeleton and grow into their new one. Calcium is the key element here, as it is used to harden the new exoskeleton. Not wanting to waist any calcium, prior to the molt, a crawfish removes as much calcium from the old shell and stores it in its gastrolith (stomach stone). It then blasts this calcium back into the new shell to create a hard exoskeleton.

And the point of all this is...? When a big brown trout eats a crawfish, the trout's stomach dissolves the crawfish, except for the gastrolith. This white, pill-like stone (it looks like a Tums antacid) is passed through digestive track of the fish and drops to the bottom of the stream. A big brown trout will eat many crawfish and the expelled gastroliths will collect in the tail out of brown trout's run. Just think bones near a dragon's lair.

With the Loop Multi 696-4 fly rod rigged and ready, a walked the banks of the Truckee in search of a promising run. Prior to fishing, I inspected the tail of the run, looking for expelled gastroliths. Within a short hunt, I found a run with many (as in a lot) gastroliths in the tail out. The Loop Multi six weight had plenty of casting power to propel my Airflo six weight Mend fly line with ease. It's a nine foot six inch rod that provided easy mends and superior line control.

I could easily dead drift, jig and swing my crawfish pattern. I had total control over my many casts and drifts. My guess is that most people would have moved on to another run after a dozen or so casts, but not me. The confidence provided me by visually inspecting the collection of gastroliths kept me on the hunt. On one drift, my line literally stop. There was slight pressure and I set the hook. My Loop Multi rod bowed over and the Loop Multi fly reel's drag smoothly paid out line.

It was a big, really big brown trout on my line. I had twelve pound tippet, so I felt pretty confident putting hard pressure on the fish to keep him from structure. Not kidding, these big brown trout act more like Ling Cod, as they will dig (head first) into any crevice afforded them by the stream. I had the chance to land two more large trout during my day. Casting the Loop Multi 696-4 was fun and easy. It had plenty of power and balanced nicely with the Loop Multi 6-9 fly reel. This is one great rod/outfit for any angler wanting to pursue larger trout with confidence.

March 6, 2014 (Sonoma, CA): The Red Truck 5110-4 Nymph Outfit is a comprehensive nymphing solution, owing its efficiency to the balance between rod, reel and line. That said, the rod itself is one of Red Truck's most innovative and versatile models. With an adjustable weight system in the reel seat and interchangeable butt sections, it's built to handle changing conditions without compromise and provide an individualized fit for every angler.

The Right Length: Eleven feet means a lot of reach, and the Red Truck 5110-4 Nymph Outfit is all about getting your nymph to otherwise inaccessible water. Heavy nymph rigs can struggle at a distance, especially with an ordinary five-weight, but the Red Truck Diesel 5110-4 is long enough for drag-free dead drifts and seamless mends. Ultimately, nymphing is about catching more fish, and the more water you can cover the higher your fish count. Despite its length and power, the Diesel 5110-4 rod is exceptionally responsive and transmits energy efficiently through the blank and into the handle so you don't miss a take.

Multiple rods in one: A huge factor in the design and development of the Diesel 5110-4 was delivering versatile performance that could accommodate the unique demands of every fisherman and adapt to changing environments. The solution came in the form of an interchangeable fighting butt and lower grip section, as well as counterweights that attach to the reel seat. Now you can zero in on the perfect balance between a heavy nymph rig, your fly line, and your reel. Customize your setup on the fly and don't be surprised if you wind up using this as much as a micro-switch setup as much as a nymph rig.

The Reel: The Diesel 7/8wt reel runs large for a reason. It balances well with the rod when you're fishing heavy nymph rigs, and the added line capacity and efficient retrieve makes it great for covering big water. It's a workhouse of a fly reel that complements the performance of the 5110-4.

The Lines: The Airflo Mend WF5W is a no-brainer. Designed specifically for nymphing, it combines a long, powerful head with an extended rear taper. Translation: huge, effortless mends to compliment the reach of the Diesel 5110-4.

The Rundown: If you're into nymphing, get your hands on the Red Truck 5110-4 Switch Nymph Outfit. Each element has been thoughtfully designed for exceptional performance, but the rod alone is a standalone success of the Red Truck Lineup.

Red Truck Diesel 5110-4 Switch Outfit Review - Leland's James Park

Although it doesn't get much better than dry fly fishing, there's no arguing that a trout's diet is primarily subsurface. An angler wanting to maximize their would do well to nymph fish.

It's true there are multiple nymphing techniques, like sight nymphing (no indicator) or micro nymphing (just a puff of yarn for your indicator). There's even the old “hopper-dropper” rig where a large dry fly supports a smaller nymph. However, the most popular technique employs a larger, high-floating, highly-visible indicator. Under this indicator, we commonly attach weight (split shot) and multiple nymphs. This effective rig sure catches fish, but it's a challenge to cast on most trout rods.

Red Truck has the solution for those of us who want to catch as many trout as possible. It's their Diesel Nymph Rig. At 11 feet, it makes for easy casting of larger and heavier nymph rigs and serves up the best drag free drifts I've ever encountered. Honestly, I found myself not having to mend at all on some drifts because of the fly rod's length.

You'd think that this longer fly rod would be very tip heavy and would create stress on my casting hand, but Red Truck took care of this in two ways: first, the 5110-4 fly rod comes with counter balance weights. Just remove the fighting butt and add the necessary weight. The eleven foot rod felt more like a longer nine footer. Secondly, the complete outfit comes with a larger and heavier fly reel, giving me more line capacity and added reel weight, further balancing this effective fly rod. There's even an extended lower grip option if you prefer.

I fished this outfit for a weekend on California's Truckee river. There's lots of trout in that river, but they don't come easy and the water is heavily trafficked. That's where the added length put me at an advantage: I could access water and seams that others couldn't. Plus I could keep my fly in the zone longer. It was one of the most fun weekends I've had on the Truckee, and a personal best for the river.

Even if you already own a solid nymph rod or outfit, I guarantee you don't own anything like this outfit. It's as good as nymph fishing gets. To put it another way, fishing with this outfit is like bringing private water everywhere you go.

August 1 (Sonoma, CA): If you're new to fly fishing, you should know that the defining attribute of our sport is the unique way we deliver our fly. It's called fly casting and this activity should be celebrated.

To truly enjoy fly casting to the fullest, you need a balanced outfit that feels comfortable and stable in your hand. This doesn't happen by chance. Rod length, rod weight, line weight and reel weight all play a role in a truly balanced outfit. Miss a step and the outfit falls out of balance...and so does the fly casting experience.

Furthermore, a fly fishing outfit must be efficient at amplifying and transferring your body's movement and energy into the fly line, which is the goal of any efficient fly cast. Rod taper, blank thickness and materials all play a role in this quest. When you smoothly pull our Leland Sonoma Trout fly rod to a stop (the secret to a good cast), you'll be rewarded with the smoothest, most-efficient fly cast you've ever made.

The right fly line also makes a difference for fly casting enjoyment. The correct taper, head length and weight done smartly makes casting that much easier and fishing more effective. Our Leland Pliny fly line solves the riddle. Color-coded, so you can always efficiently control your line and put your fly where you want it. And since 90% of trout are caught within a forty foot (or less) cast, our Pliny fly line assures that distance on every cast. Simply put, this fly line is a joy to cast.

Sure a trout fly reel is just a storage device for the fly line, but the Leland Sonoma Trout fly reel is one heck of a reel. Fully-machined from solid, bar-stock aluminum, then anodized for a long life a hard fishing. Its simple click drag needs no adjusting. It will keep your fly line from overrunning when a trout charges off with your fly. If necessary, you can slow down that fish by “palming” the exposed rim of the fly reel's spool. It's simple, elegant and functional. Most importantly, it perfectly balances with the Sonoma Trout fly rod.

It takes focus and planning to design a fly fishing outfit where the whole (rod, reel and line) is greater than the sum of parts and that's exactly what you get in our Leland Sonoma Trout Fly Fishing Outfit. Fly casting becomes effortless and accurate as you discover efficient control of your fly line and catch more fish.

Our Leland Sonoma Trout is the perfect fly fishing outfit for anyone wanting to learn how to cast correctly and efficiently, then take smooth loops of fly line to a small trout stream and apply your craft. Controlled distance, accuracy and subtle presentations will be yours at will. Fly casting in this manner alone will put a smile on your face, but when your fine cast is rewarded with a wild trout, the wold becomes a bit better.

If you've been wanting to fly fish, or if you've been struggling with your current rod, reel and line, it's time to find balance and efficiency in our Leland Sonoma Trout Fly Fishing Outfit. By the way, this is the same fly rod, reel and fly line we use for fly casting instruction every day at our fly fishing ranch in Sonoma. We love it and you won't be disappointed.

Pro Review - Leland's Burke White

Spending my days at the ranch assisting anglers with more efficient fly casts, I've noticed a thing or two. Mainly I've noticed most anglers using more energy than necessary to present the fly accurately.

One thing is for sure, using proven fly casting principles to more efficiently cast a fly line is important. However just as important is a balanced and efficient fly fishing outfit and the Leland Sonoma Trout Outfit is just the ticket.

The Leland Sonoma Trout outfit is brilliant. It's balanced in hand, which not only makes this outfit more comfortable to hold, it makes casting easier. It's also incredibly efficient at amplifying our students' casting energy and transferring this energy into the fly line. Simply put, this is one easy casting fly fishing outfit.

Any angler will quickly notice how easy this outfit is to cast, and when tight loops jump efficiently off this rod's tip, confidence is born. Confidence on the water makes all the difference...in enjoyment and fish-catching success.

If you're new to fly fishing or on the hunt for a truly-balanced and efficient fly fishing outfit for trout...you just found it.

October 13, 2011 (San Francisco, CA): Ask the legendary Göran Andersson about his signature series of Loop fly rods, and he'll talk to you as an artist or composer would about their finest work. Fishing one produces a kind of harmony between angler and environment made possible when the right rod—like a finely tuned instrument—sharpens the experience and transforms instincts into effortless, intuitive casts. Meet the father of modern fly tackle and experience the first production fly rods to bear his name: Goran Andersson.

The Rodmaker's Rod: This is not a fly rod that's a year or two in the making, it's the culmination of sixty years of Göran Andersson's expertise distilled into an unprecedented rod taper, constructed from the latest materials, and available to everyone who appreciates the power of the right tool. The son of a Swedish fly fisherman and rodmaker, Göran Andersson started tailoring fly lines at age eight and began building his own fly rods soon after. That passion would become his life's work, devoting himself to the art of the cast and tools to constantly better his techniques. Despite developing rod designs for the world's leading manufacturers, pioneering the underhand cast, and contributing immeasurable insight into the sport of fly fishing, this is the first series of fly rods to feature his name. Why? Because Andersson's Signature Series Fly Rods are not simply another of his cutting-edge creations, they are the fly rods he brings with him to fish the world's blue-ribbon waters. Delivering the precision, accuracy, power and finesse that a man of Andersson's ability demands, Loop's Göran Andersson Signature Series is a crowning achievement in fly rod design

Series Overview...

Form & Function:
Too often in today's fly rod market does technology take precedent over performance. Loop remains steadfast in their commitment to innovation with a purpose, and their Göran Andersson Fly Rods are constructed around a fundamental commitment to line control and an uninterrupted, efficient transfer of energy through the blank. The engine for this efficiency lies in the Andersson Series' unique taper and action: to label it a moderate-fast action is too vague, and the term deep-flexing is often misunderstood. A more apt description is a responsive or enhanced-fast action, where the quick-firing accuracy of a fast action tip combines with a high modulus, graphite butt that flexes enough to load the rod in perfect balance. The result is butter smooth casting and absolute control over the trajectory of your line, allowing you to redirect and adjust your cast in the air. That means your cast isn't over until your fly hits the water, extending your control over every square inch of the river.

This total command of a river is synonymous with Goran's signature underhand cast, a technique that allows him to access every spot no matter how limited the backcast room. The Andersson Signature Series is the most effective rod for underhand casting, loading well from the water and opening up stretches of river that others simply can't fish. That being said, the action lends itself to traditional overhead casts and anglers both novice and expert alike.

The Lineup...

Loop Göran Andersson Signature Series are available in single and double-hand models, each satisfying a particular application and all possessing a proud place in Andersson's quiver. Featuring an understated gray finish and crimson ferrel wraps, the look is uniquely Loop and entirely sophisticated. The Goran Andersson Single Hand Series are available in two models: the 9'4" #4 is a great all-around trout rod, and the 10' #7 is an exceptional single-hand rod for steelhead or Loop's coveted Atlantic Salmon.

The double-hand lineup offers a more extensive selection of lengths and weights, in keeping with Göran Andersson's reputation as the preeminent two-handed caster and father of the underhand cast. The 12' #6 is ideal for summer steelhead and tailwater trout, extending your reach across the river. The GA Signature Series 14' #8 is a serious tool for stellar salmon and steelhead fishing, delivering an extraordinary command over every square inch of water without comprising sensitivity. Both the 11'6" and 12'6" #9's are also ideal for salmon and steelies, with the latter being Andersson's preferred fly rod for Atlantic salmon and sea trout. Then there's the monster of the bunch: the 14'6" #10, built for vast rivers, huge mends and unforgettable fish.

Regardless of the model, all of the Loop Göran Andersson Signature Series Fly Rods are all groundbreaking, effectively eliminating any disconnect between fly and fisher and delivering seamless, spot-on casts. Serene waters deserve superb gear, and the Loop Göran Andersson Fly Rods celebrate the pleasure of fishing time well spent.

Loop Göran Andersson Fly Rods - Pro Review by Leland's Ben Paull

What's the Word...

Casting a Göran Andersson Signature Series Fly Rod alone is fun, but alongside the man himself, it's a rare opportunity to experience a world-class rod with its distinguished designer. We spent the afternoon casting Andersson's Signature Series Fly Rods at the Leland Ranch in Sonoma, and both the single and double-handers proved to be unlike anything else on the market. Delivering a dynamic action and acute line control, they are the embodiment of Loop's functional innovation.

Action...

The action of Loop's Göran Andersson Signature Series is difficult to classify. It manages to have a sensitivity that permeates the whole rod without compromising power or contributing to a soft, sloppy action. At the same time, it remains fast and accurate in the tip like a traditional fast action rod. The result is a rod that loads well off the water when you're underhand casting and also performs well with traditional, overhead casts. Don't let the idea of a deep flexing action mislead you: Göran Andersson Signature Series Fly Rods are far from your full flexing rod of yesteryear, instead proving to be a contemporary, innovative action meant for a diversity of styles.

Fit and Finish...

Like everything Loop, the Göran Andersson Signature Series Fly Rods deliver on aesthetics. The deep gray finish and and aluminum reel seat are sleek, and the crimson wraps contribute a nice bit of color to a great looking rod. The triangle reel seat is certainly new-school, but the overall impact is classic and, much like Göran, concerned with function over flash. In all the rod looks as good as it feels, and the Portuguese cork and ceramic stripping guides are always a nice touch.

Run Down...

Pros:
When one of the greatest casters ever develops a rod for his favorite fly fishing destinations, chances are the results are going to be impressive.

Cons: The unique action is different, and that means it isn't easy to classify. But for anyone who wants to broaden their game, these rods are a great excuse to try something new.

Bottom Line: The Göran Andersson Signature Series Fly Rods are fun, efficient, and different from anything we've fished. Between the unique action, effortless casting, and timeless design, they're great rods and another example of Loop's comprehensive approach to tackle.

The Loop Opti Stream 590-4 takes second place in this year's Five-Weight Shootout, courtesy of Yellowstone Angler

December 12, 2013 (Sonoma, CA): Thirty years ago in Sweden, Christer Sjöberg dreamed of creating a company that designed functional fly fishing tools that deserved to exist. Each product was crafted to provide a solution for the an angler, making fly fishing more enjoyable and successful. Loop Tackle was born. Loop was the first company to ever offer a true, large-arbor fly reel. It provided faster fly line retrieve, reduced line coiling and assured a consistent drag setting. Proving Loop's design valid, almost all fly reel manufacturers now offer a large-arbor design. Loop Tackle continues to push design boundaries, creating fly fishing tackle that is worthy of ownership.

The RundownLoop Tackle's Opti Series of fly rods again shows a commitment to creating fly rods with a purpose. Each rod model is optimized with materials, components and most importantly, action to give you the best fly fishing experience possible. Rather than create a fly rod series numerically (2 to 14 weight), the Loop Opti series approaches things differently. Knowing most fly anglers chase trout, Loop Tackle's Opti seriesfocuses on making the most functional trout fly rod models possible.

Indicator Nymph FavoriteLoop Opti Nymph 590-4
It's a fact that the majority of a trout's diet is subsurface. Any fly angler focused on catching as many trout as possible already knows this and that's exactly why the Loop Opti Nymph (9' #5 4-piece) fly rod exists. It's well balanced, stable and efficient and transferring your casting energy into the fly line. With added power in the but section this rod can cast larger indicators, weight and several flies with ease, yet still has sensitivity and the ability to protect lighter tippet when needed. This is one popular fly rod for those who want to catch lots of trout in the broadest fishing situations.

Float Tube FavoriteLoop Opti Stillwater 593-4
Stillwater trout fisheries, like lakes and reservoirs are abundant in the United States. Even better, some of the largest trout can be found here. Unlike river trout that burn calories in moving water, trout that inhabit lakes have the luxury of calmly cruising the stillwaters, with little effort, in search of food. The result are robust fish and with the right fly rod, you'll catch them. The Loop Opti Stillwater (9'3” #5 4-piece) is exactly the rod you want. With a little extra length, you can hold your back cast higher above the water, resulting in longer casts. With its optimized action, you can cast just about any fly line (floating, intermediate, high-speed) with ease. It's also quite sensitive, allowing you to perceive the slightest tap on your fly. This is your rod to discover the game of stillwater trout fishing.

Streamer FavoriteLoop Opti Stream 693-4
No doubt about it, the largest trout in your river didn't get that big by just eating insects. They added that extra body weight by eating meat, in the form of smaller fish and crayfish. A fly fisher wanting to hook the biggest trout in the water should definitely throw a streamer. Using a standard five weight fly rod to cast bigger-heavier flies is arduous at best. With the right fly rod, cone-headed buggers and sculpin patterns cast like a dry fly. The Loop Opti Stream (9'3” #6 4-piece) is just the right rod for the job. It's got plenty of power to cast the six wight fly line (floating or sink tip), which will efficiently and accurately carry your big but to the mark. It's got a bit of extra length that makes mending your swing real easy and has plenty of power in the butt for solid hook sets and big fish battles. This is the fly rod to add to your collection. That is...if you like to catch the biggest trout in your waters.

Big Water Streamer FavoriteLoop Opti Stillwater 696-4
Loop originally designed this fly rod to be a heavier-gauge loch rod to cast big streamers to large stillwater trout. With its longer length, powerful taper and fighting butt, we thought it might cast big cone-headed streamers well big rivers. We tested our thinking and found it to be one of the best big water streamer rods we've fished. It's got all the right stuff...plenty of power to boost big flies with efficiency and accuracy as well as butt strength to pull big fish from heavy current. It's surprisingly well-balanced, and incredibly durable. Stop trying to cast streamers on your five weight fly rod. Step up to a Loop Optimized fly rod and you'll understand that some things were meant to exist...and this is one of them.

The Wrap Up: Loop's proven history of designing focused, solution-based fly fishing equipment that provides fly anglers a refreshing and confident purchase is a rarity today. Unfortunately today, too many fly rod  manufacturers produce rod models with no specific or intended purpose...they just make fly rods in varying lengths and weights...lots of them. It's no wonder so many anglers are confused. With Loop Tackle's Opti series, you'll always know what you're getting and when the day comes and you're on the water, using the right tool...the world is a better place.

Pro Review - Leland's Burke White

Late season trout fishing in the western states might mean many things to many anglers, but to me...it means streamer fishing for some of the largest trout of the season. During fall and early winter most rivers and streams are at their lowest flows of the season. Large trout that once sheltered under heavy flows become more accessible. In headwater fisheries (rivers that flow into larger lakes), big brown trout begin their spawning run upstream and create a trophy angling opportunity for us fly fishers. It's the perfect time to hunt big fish with streamers.

I just returned from the Upper Colorado River where I had a late-season chance to cast large streamers to chunky trout using an exceptional fly rod, Loop Tackle's Opti Stream 693-4. Often overlooked is the important fact that when we are fly casting, we're not casting the fly at all. We're actually casting the fly line. When fishing with larger, heavier, wind-resistant flies, we therefor need a fly line with more mass to efficiently carry our fly accurately to the mark. A well-designed six weight fly rod is a solid bet for this purpose and that's just what Loop has designed in their Opti Stream 693-4 fly rod.

Anyone can grab a six weight fly rod and start chucking streamers in moving water. Heck, you might even catch a trout or two. However, in my opinion, there's far more to the fly fishing experience than just catching a fish. To me, efficient, enjoyable fly casts add value to the overall experience on the water and when you're casting heavy streamers the right fly rod will make all the difference. When you do make a smooth, accurate cast to likely water and a big trout responds, that's an “earned” fish and “earned” fish are far more memorable than just a “caught” fish.

Too often fly rods are quantified by how little they weigh, what outrageous performance they claim to promise or the fact that they use exotic materials or components. To me, a quality fly rod starts with the blank of the rod. Words like efficient, balanced, smooth, stable and accurate get me excited and those are the same words I'd use to describe the Loop Opti Stream 693-4 fly rod. Each cast (even with a heavy streamer) was easy. I didn't have to work hard at all to cover the nooks and crannies of the Upper Colorado and the fish responded well.

The 9'3” length of this rod might sound a bit odd, but I actually found it both pleasant in balance (for a slightly longer rod) and very functional at roll casts and line mends. Three inches doesn't sound like much, and it's not on paper, but it was pleasantly noticeable on the water. As stated before, I'm a big fan of six weight fly rods for streamer fishing and this Loop Opti is a true six weight. It's still an enjoyable trout rod, but it generates enough power to smoothly cast my six weight fly line and efficiently carry the larger streamers I was casting. Put another way, it's a happy balance between power and grace.

As far as the rest of the rod goes, it's well-appointed with solid components, including quality cork and a bomb-proof reel seat. Thread wraps are tight, epoxy work clean and I can't complain about the color. Of course it comes with a rod sock and a nylon-covered hard tube for protection while traveling.

I've fished many rods during my career in fly fishing, but there's something special about Loop fly rods. The action is not overly fast (like many “performance” rods seem to be today), yet this Loop Opti Stream has the ability to generate ample power, which efficiently transfers into every cast. Best way to put it, you won't have to work hard when casting larger streamers with this rod and you'll smile on every cast.

Oh, and the fishing...well, not too shabby. If told you the actual number and size of fish I caught on this rod, you wouldn't believe anything I've written.

Leland's Select Models:

June 20, 2014 (Sonoma, CA):  Scott has built its brand around uncompromising quality and authenticity. Every handcrafted fly rod comes straight from the heart of Colorado trout country and is a testament to the finest gear that fly fishing has to offer. With their Radian Series, Scott has once again outdone themselves and proven that obsession is at the heart of innovation.

Back to Basics:Since its release, Scott's Radian Series has received accolades across the board. It's slogan, “Where Fast Meets Feel,” is at the heart of this praise. Since the introduction of fast action fly rods, anglers have enjoyed higher line speed and efficiency, but at the expense of the nuanced feel of slower, more traditional rods. The Radian Series succeeds on both fronts: it's fun as hell to fish, with plenty of subtle touch, and it's as powerful and accurate as anything on the market. The best of both worlds, sure, but it stands in a class all its own.

The Rod: The proprietary blank technology is behind this breakthrough, but really it comes down to performance. The ReAct technology is billed as increasing recovery speed by “minimizing energy-sapping vibrations,” and in hand it feels wildly versatile. But until you've cast this rod, you can't appreciate how fun it can be, and you're better off skipping the hype and hitting the river.

Sierra Nevada Reel & Fly Line: And as for the components? Top-notch from tip to butt, featuring premium materials assembled by true professionals. Titanium framed stripping guides, top-grade Portuguese cork, custom reel seats with burled box elder spacers, and patented snake guides.

The Rundown:  Overall, Scott's Radian Series is a new level of performance with the same 40 year old promise of the “Scott Difference.” The guarantee that every one of their fly rods is meticulously crafted and tested by people who love to fish, and backed by a company that produces the best fly rods in the world.

Pro Review - Leland's Casey Rolig

We've all heard of Konnetic technology by now or how about Proprioception from Simms in their new wading boots? Well Scott Fly Rods is guilty of these words and phrases that make one scratch their head in wonder... X-Core, ReAct and ARC are a few technologies put into today's Scott fly rods. Then there are slogan's. Every brand has a few. Some are true and some borderline false advertising. However, Scott has nailed their current slogan right on the head with the new Radian series... "Putting the FEEL in FAST". With these rods you actually get a versatile fly rod to cast a wide range of flies sizes, in varying wind conditions all while getting the sensitivity we as fly fisherman expect. Not only while casting will you feel the weight of the line load the rod without bogging it down but you'll have a better sense of strikes and tippet protection.

What's my new favorite rod? The 10' 5-weight Radian. Instead of nymph fishing with indicators aka bobbers I'm doing much more high stick nymphing. This is where you keep a tight line to the flies so you feel ever little tic of the bottom or fish's mouth which eliminates heavy bobbers and make fishing subsurface much more enjoyable. Plus the extra 12 inches eliminates the need to hold the rod over your head all day and makes roll casting a breeze.

To round out my review we'll discuss the other lengths and weights we choose to carry. The following are the most popular fishing styles matched with the correct length and weight rod. 8' 6" 4-weight DRY FLY, 9' 5-weight ALL PURPOSE TROUT, 10' 5-weight NYMPH, 9' 6-weight w/ Fighting Butt STREAMER, 9' 8-weight BONEFISH (bass too) and 10' 7-weight STEELHEAD NYMPH.

September 26 (Sonoma, CA): Intimidated by the lengths, weights, and line choices of Spey rods today? You are not alone.... It feels like every other blog, club, or site is talking up Spey casting. As more people talk about it and look into it, more opinions come up and more choices are made available. Double Hand rods are useful tools and can make fishing your next Steelhead run much more enjoyable and efficient. That’s why we designed the Sonoma Summer Steelhead Outfit.

At Leland Rod Co. we believe solutions are the answer, and as technology moves us forward, so do the tools we use for tackling our favorite species. Most people think of a 6 weight fly rod as their bigger-water trout rod, using it to fish nymphs or stripping streamers. Why then do we offer a 12 foot 6 weight for Steelhead? Because, it’s FUN, it WORKS, and your day on the water will be filled with smiles and efficient, controlled casts.

Many have considered Steelhead the fish of 1,000 casts, so why not use an outfit that makes those casts enjoyable? The Leland Sonoma Steelhead Spey Rod has been designed using an “adaptive” action that can handle a variety of line systems and is almost effortless to cast. It tracks incredibly well, and of course, we only use top-shelf components to finish off this beautiful rod.

Keeping in mind tradition and simplicity, we have paired the rod with the Leland Reel Co. British Columbia Sea Run Reel. This elegant reel is completely machined, features a narrow arbor design and classic and proven click and pawl drag. Sporting a double handle design and solid-brass hardware accents, this reel screams tradition and will scream even louder when you hook into bright chrome.

One of the biggest frustrations we hear from clients is the overwhelming offering of two-handed lines systems. Well, we at Leland have you covered from top to bottom. The Airflo 390 Scandi is perfect for skating dries or throwing lighter, traditional flies with a longer leader. If getting down is a must, simply loop on the Airflo 450 Skagit Head along with a sinking tip and dredge away with your favorite leech pattern. The system includes an Airflo 20 lb Running Line with a large welded loop making it easy to switch out between the two head options. A mesh head wallet is also included, making storage of your tips, heads, and leaders a breeze.

Make this Steelhead season your season to learn the techniques and take advantage of what a well balanced Spey Outfit can do. The Leland Rod Co. Sonoma Steelhead Outfit will do just that!

Pro Review - Leland's Burke White

A balanced and efficient two-handed, fly fishing outfit will open up your steelheading world.

There are many fabled steelhead rivers in the Northwest. However, one river is often left off the list. It's Northern California's Klamath River. This classic river has long lazy runs that allow fish to hold just about anywhere they wish. Anglers fly fishing the Klamath will make a lot of casts at varying lengths and with limited backcast room. In other words, having the right outfit will make or break the experience. I had a chance to fish the Leland Rod Co. Sonoma Steelhead Outfit on the Klamath, at it was a blast.

Without getting too technical in materials and components, what I can say is this outfit is balanced and efficient, making every cast fun and easy. I only fished the Airflo 390 grain Scandi head with traditional steelhead flies. Casting this head on this rod is like driving a classic sports car through wine country with the top down...it's fun! Although I did have the Skagit head and sink tips with me, I never used them. Casting the Scandi was too much fun and I was catching fish. Never mess with success.

The classic Sea Run reel added to the enjoyment. It's a real throw back as far as cosmetics, but it sure made the right sound when a bright fish ran down stream and it again reminded me that I really didn't need a super fancy drag system to enjoy the sport.

The strange part is, this outfit is tough to review as it doesn't have a long list of hyper-performance features. No sealed drags, no nano-resin system or titanium guides. It's kinda boring on paper. But on the water, casting, swinging, mending and catching...it's everything I want in a true steelhead outfit.

I'd recommend this outfit for anyone who's looking for a truly-balanced, two-handed outfit for steelheading. It's best suited for summer steelhead rivers, but I can honestly say that I'd be more than happy chasing some winter fish with it, too. It's just one very sweet-casting outfit.
