Steelhead

Casting for chrome

California rivers like the Russian, Gualala, Klamath and Eel once drew steelhead anglers from around the world to chase California's sea-run rainbows. Today, California's steelhead runs have diminished from their historic levels, but all is not lost.  Our steelhead still return annually and you can still cross paths with these magnificent fish.  Regardless of fish catch, spending a day casting a well-balanced outfit is a reward in itself.  Leland Rod Company celebrates the annual return of these treasured fish and well-crafted casts with our Sonoma Steelhead Outfit.

Leland Fly Rod Company's Sonoma Steelhead outfit offers casting joy and the dream of chrome.

detdesc::Leland on Scott Howell's Ska-Opper

Steelhead aren't bass. This everyone knows. But believe it or not, they'll hit a popping bug, and HARD, if you fish it right.
A few anglers, beginning with Scott himself, are beginning to fish the
Ska-Opper on steelhead streams from California to BC. On Scott's
homewater, the North Umpqua of southern Oregon, this fly is hands-down
the best way to find fish from June to September. By drawing
aggressive fish from their lies in almost any water type, the Ska-Opper
provides what has to be the most exciting way to fish for steelhead. No mere trout rise, steelhead explode on the Ska-Opper!
featdesc::
  • Steelhead Guru Scott Howell ties this fly for chugging on a tight swung line in the summer months
  • With a foam back, a deer hair body, and a gurgler-style lip, this fly is incredibly buoyant and throws a spout of water when chugged
  • Hot, aggressive steelhead will explode on it, leaving you speechless
  • Quick, sharp raises of the rod tip best chug this fly across a run
  • Fish with a clench knot, a loop knot, or a riffle hitch
  • Feel the weight of the fish before you lift into it
  • SIZES 2 and 4

detdesc::Leland on Scott Howell Squidro Winter Series Steelhead Flies

The Scott Howell Squidro Winter Series is not just another big wiggly. The combination of extra large profile, vibrant colors, and fast sink rate of the Squidro Winter Series expands the boundaries of “fishable” conditions to those previously dismissed as blown out. This is particularly advantageous to anglers fishing coastal rivers that rise and fall in a matter of days, if not hours, and where being on the water before the fish blast up their natal skinny water is the difference between a banner day and a goose egg.

The longer rubber legs on the Winter Series Squidro impart an irresistible breathing action in to the fly, and because they do not absorb any water, casting a big fly with large lead eyes has never been easier.  We can think of no better way to seduce a winter steelhead than with the large, undulating wiggle of a Winter Series Squidro! Whether you are fishing in California, Alaska, or anywhere in between, the Squidro Winter Series is designed to elicit an aggressive chase response from steelhead, that have most likely been gorging themselves on real squid in the days, weeks, months, and years prior to their freshwater return. However, Alaskan salmon will also crush these.

The Squidro Winter Series flies provide an unmatched combination of profile, movement, sink rate, castability, durability, and versatility – the results speak for themselves!

featdesc::
  • The most effective color combos for heavy winter flows
  • Extra Large profile pushes water, yet sinks fast down into the zone
  • Undulating silicone legs get the steelies excited
  • Maintains a swimming, breathing action while swinging through a wide range of current speeds
  • Fish with a loop knot, for faster sink and more movement
  • Cast, mend, swing, and HOLD ON TIGHT
  • Length: 1.75in. shank, 3.5in. overall
  • Hook: Size 2 trailer hook
Leland on Scott Howell The release of Skagit Master II is letting the world in on a secret that Leland has known for years: when it comes to steelheading experience, knowledge, and technique, Scott Howell is a resource without peer. We think he might just be the fishiest man alive. For almost four decades, Scott has been fishing the steelhead waters of the Pacific Rim, and for over 20 years, he's been guiding them professionally. He was one of the handful of Pacific Northwest anglers to pick up two-handed rods in the late 1980s, and was an integral part of the period of casting and line-design innovation known as the "Skagit Revolution." He was also part of the first batch of American guides to fish the unexplored steelhead rivers of Russia's Kamchatka peninsula. His wealth of experience and scope of expertise are difficult to fathom. For six years, when he was guiding in Alaska every summer, Scott made his home in British Columbia. One year, he promised himself we would fish every day, from the time he got home from Alaska in September, through the winter, until he went back the following May - and he did. Each year Scott spends over 300 days guiding on his homewaters in southern Oregon, with the vast majority of his bookings coming from repeat clients. Leland feels very fortunate to have this opportunity to work with Scott.

One thing is for sure, when you go fly fishing, you're going to lose flies and change flies. You're going to tie knots...many of them. And, you'll need to clip your leader and tippet efficiently all darn day. Without the right tool for a clean cut, you'll be cursing every time you re-rig your offering. That's where we at Leland come in. We've hunted high and low for a solution and now we've got it for you.

Our handy nipper comes razor sharp and ready to cut just about any fishing line. Our hardened steel nippers will hold an edge for many seasons. Our red nipper makes it easier for you to locate your nippers when you need it...when the light is low and the fish are up. But we didn't stop there. We also included our high-test, spring-loaded zinger/retractor. You can pin in on anything from your fishing shirt to your vest or pack and it won't come off.

Now, when it's time to clip, you'll easily find your nipper, effectively cut your line and never lose your most used vest tool again. Don't be bashful, get a couple. You'll find them handy on many of your fishing packs.

Call them what you will, forceps, clamps or hemostats, this handy tool is darn-near a requirement for any fly angler. Why? You can do just about anything with them. You can bend down hook barbs. You can gently remove your fly from a fish's mouth. You can gently remove your fly from your buddy's mouth (or arm or leg). Heck, you can even change a blown fuse in your fishing truck.

We'll keep it super simple, these are the right sized clamps, built strong for a long life of...well, clamping stuff. They are black, so they won't flash in the sun and scare your fish. They also lock in place, so you can attach it to just about any piece of clothing, so they won't bang around while fishing. Finally, we've included an insurance policy in the form of a handy, coiled lanyard. Now, you'll never lose your forceps, clamps, hemostats...or whatever you want to call them.

Leland's Nature Boy Lanyard, Loaded:

Get organized and rig like a pro.

A fly fishing lanyard is nothing new. They've been around for many years in an attempt to gather the necessary fly fishing tools in one useful place. Some lanyards are a bit too cute with the use of wine corks or even turquoise rock (Yes, I said turquoise), but cute doesn't necessarily mean functional. We thought it was time for an upgrade.

The Leland Lanyard is hand crafted in the USA by Nature Boy Designs. Like us at Leland, “NBD” believes that no fly fishing product should ever be offered to you unless it deserves to exist. Well, this lanyard does. This hand-crafted product is fully adjustable to fit not only you, but to hold your handy fly fishing tools right where you need them. There's even a smartly-placed clamp to keep your lanyard from banging around as you fish, as well as a safety release in case you get roped up.

But we're not done. This Nature Boy Designs lanyard comes fully-loaded with all the necessary fly fishing tools any angler might need, including: nipper, zinger, forceps and a tippet-t (for holding spools of tippet). You can wear it around your neck or you can modify it to fit the shoulder straps of your trusty waders. Everything just makes sense.

So stop banging around every pocket in your vest looking for the right tool. With the Leland Lanyard, your stream side tools will be right where you want them, right when you need them for quick, easy access and fast rigging. Now you can spend even more time fishing.

featdesc::Each Lanyard is made by Keith himself and includes the following features:

    • USA 550 Paracord
    • Stainless Steel Clips
    • Safety breakaway feature
    • Comfortable Foam Neck Strap with adjustable length
    • Can easily be attached to your waders or worn by itself with included neck strap
    • Dual Cord Locks so lanyard can be cinched up against Wader Straps
    • Alligator Clip to prevent lanyard from swinging
