New Zealand Nymph Outfit:

After a hike that felt like miles upon miles of walking you see a big Rainbow sitting under a riffle, you tie on a big Rubberlegs followed by your favorite Copper John pattern under an indicator. A big roll cast followed by a mend gets your indicator
drifting down the bubble line. Just as you whisper to yourself “foam is
home” your indicator dives toward the bottom. A strong hook set and the
fight is on!

Most trout are opportunistic and live in water that is constantly reacting to Mother Nature's ebbs and flows.  Water levels, water temperature and even aquatic and terrestrial insects vary in availability by season.  It's in this ever-changing world that trout must adjust in order to survive.  Fly anglers must also adjust their approach to be successful.

For these reasons, we've created the New Zealand Trout Fly Fishing Outfit.

This balanced collection of gear was actually designed from the ground up allowing each component (rod, reel, line, leader) to compliment one another.  The result is the best balanced trout fly fishing outfit you've ever touched.  From a casting perspective our New Zealand Trout Outfit offers the angler any cast he or she might need to be successful:  underhand, overhand, roll cast or even single Spey.  Varying casts and rigging techniques is the best way to enjoy every cast and catch.

We've also included in this outfit an extra, matching tip for our New Zealand Trout rod...in the event you fracture your tip on a trout trip.  To compliment our fine casting fly rod, we've chosen our Leland Custom line.  The universal taper of this line allows the angler to "rig" just about any way and still accurately deliver the fly or rig on target.  We've professionally loaded this line on our Leland Reel Co. Classic Trout fly reel.

Beyond aesthetically pleasing, this reel balances perfectly with our fly rod and when joined together, arguably makes the best looking outfit you've laid eyes on.  Finally, we've included a three-pack of ou Leland New Zealand Tapered Leaders(12' 4X) for smooth casts and fishing success.

Fly fishing is a grand excuse to find yourself in beautiful places with something fun to do. Truth is, if more people went fly fishing, the world would be happier. And to properly enjoy and celebrate the sport of fly fishing, one should focus on its defining attribute...the cast. Although it's true that any fly rod or outfit can catch a fish, it's not true that all cast the same. To enjoy each fly cast, a worthy fly fishing outfit (rod, reel and line) should be balanced and efficient. That's exactly why we at Leland Rod Co. designed the Sonoma Traveler Outfit.

In a chaotic world of fly tackle choices, our simple goal was to provide a sensible solution. We did this by designing our own gear from the ground up, where each component (fly rod, fly line and fly reel) complimented one another. The result of this project is a balanced and efficient trout fly fishing outfit, where the whole is greater than the sum of parts. Not only is this outfit brilliant for anyone just getting into the sport. It's also the perfect solution for any angler who's grown tired of tinkering with disconnected fly gear. It's all right here waiting to be efficiently cast and enjoyed.

This outfit didn't happen by luck. It was born from thirty years of retail experience, where we noticed our customers not only struggling with the overwhelming offering of big-brand fly gear...we also noticed them struggling to use it. We tossed out industry lingo like “proprietary technology” and “super performance” and instead, focused on balance, efficiency, control and accuracy. To us, fly fishing is an intimate sport where trout should not just be caught, they should be earned. And good casts earn fish!

Take for instance our Sonoma Traveler fly rod. It's not your standard nine-footer. We found by dropping one foot in rod length, we greatly reduced “swing weight,” making our fly rod feel even more balanced in hand. We also found that a shorter fly rod created naturally tighter (more efficient) loops of fly line, making casting much easier. Add to this, the most comfortable cork handle shape in the business and our balanced and efficient Sonoma Traveler is truly an extension of your arm.

A fine rod like our Sonoma Traveler is made even better with the right fly line. Our Leland New Zealand “Pliny” Trout line is just the ticket. In fact, it's so good, we named it after our favorite, local beer (Pliny The Elder). We softened the line's coating, shortened the head (the weight-forward part) and created the most efficient profile to efficiently roll your casting energy down the fly line, through the most efficient leader we've ever cast (our New ZealandTrout Leader) and to your fly. When you cast this line on our rod, you'll finally understand what we mean by efficient.

Of course every fly fishing outfit needs a fly reel. Yes, it does store your fly line...but there's more to it than that. The proper fly reel should be the correct weight to balance out the rod. It should have the correct capacity to store not only our fly line, but have enough backing (emergency line) should a big trout head down stream. A fully-sealed, disc-drag is unnecessary for trout, so we went with the classic and proven click and pawl system. It's easy to adjust, and requires little to no maintenance. Best of all, when your trout takes off, the classic sound of our Leland Classic Trout reel celebrating the moment will make you smile. Yes, it's fully-machined, anodized and all, but most importantly...this is a fly reel your granddaddy would want.

When assembled, our fly rod, our fly line and our fly reel makes every forty foot trout cast efficient, controlled and accurate. More importantly, our Sonoma Traveler outfit will make your day on the water that much better and really, that's why we all fly fish in the first place. Take our word for it. This outfit is the one we use every day at our ranch, teaching people how to efficiently control their fly line. It's also the outfit we personally take to the water on our days off.

We designed this outfit to make casting more fun primarily for beginners. The good news is, we did it. The better news is, we also created a fly fishing outfit that any expert fly angler will enjoy. Remember, this is our best-selling fly fishing outfit and comes with a full, money-back guarantee. Buy it and try it in your own back yard. Take a few days and think about it. Have your buddy try it. You won't be disappointed. If you are disappointed, we'll think you're crazy...but we'll still give you all your money back.

Pro Review - Leland's Casey Rolig

In a world full of “do it all” nine-foot five-weight fly rods, eight foot rods have become less and less common. But spend a day fishing with the Leland Sonoma Traveler Outfit, and you'll understand why other brands are missing out on a huge opportunity for fun and efficiency.

In hand, it feels lighter than just about any rod I've fished recently. But regardless of the actual weight, it's the reduction in “swing weight” provided by the shorter fly rod length that makes it not only feel lighter, it makes it more balanced. This shorter length of rod provides for naturally tighter loops of fly line, resulting is easy accuracy.

On a recent trip to Big Sur, California, I had a great time casting dry flies in tighter casting quarters. From close to medium-far, this balanced rod was a joy to cast and sensitive enough to land dry flies with ease. As a five weight, it still has ample line mass for efficiently delivering hopper dropper rigs when needed. It's also great as a nymph rig, but the trout were looking up so I was fishing dries. The fly line supplied is butter smooth. It seemed to have a softer finish than most “performance” fly lines of today. The line floats like a cork and my mends we nice and smooth.

Leland's Classic Trout Reel isn't just the correct size to accommodate my fly line and plenty of backing, it's also the correct weight to balance the entire outfit. Add to this a unique porting pattern that any grandfather would approve of and a classic click and pawl drag system and you've got a timeless fly reel. It also comes with a leather pouch for protecting this fine reel.

Wrap it all up and this outfit truly embodies what trout fly fishing is all about. Effortless, efficient, accurate casts are memorably provided by this balanced and beautiful outfit. Dry fly fishing and light nymphing are more enjoyable than ever and each fish is earned, not just caught. This four-piece outfit also comes with a nylon covered hard tube with integrated reel pouch for safe and easy transport.

"Hooking a trout has much to do with how perfectly you are able to present your dries."

The Leland Rod Co. New Zealand Dry Fly rod was designed specifically
for those trout anglers who prefer to fish with dry flies.
Well-balanced, efficient, accurate and just plain fun to cast, this rod
is what casting dreams are made of.  Rest assured that our rod is

available.  From the moment you handle this rod, to your first
cast...it's all smiles.  It's like finding a classic car with a
contemporary engine in it.

Review by W. Arnold of Georgia

Background:

I was very fortunate to be given the opportunity to test the Leland
New Zealand Dry Fly 486-4 fly rod for a couple of weeks. While testing
this rod, I was able to solicit input from other guides and also an
individual new to fly fishing, so the following comments are the
consensus of several others, not just myself.

Quality:

The build quality of this rod is excellent. The blank, guides, reel
seat, and cork grip are all top quality components. The blank is
slender and the ferrule connections are hardly noticeable. The action
is medium to fast and very well suited to dry flies and small nymphs,
and the rod tube and sock are also a "cut above." Neat, little extras
include ferrule plugs and the sock even has a small pocket to store the
plugs when the rod is assembled. There is also an extra place in the
sock for a spare rod tip. At first glance the shape of the cork grip is
a little "quirky," however, the ergonomics are excellent and the grip
is a perfect fit for most hands. Overall, this is a very well thought
out package.

Casting:

I have ready many rod reviews where the reviewer states how easy a rod
is to cast or the rod almost, "cast itself." I own a couple of these
rods and do not find these statements to be accurate. However, I found
the New Zealand Dry Fly rod to be one of the nicest casting rods I have
ever had in my hand. The rod is excellent at short distances and loads
with very little line. The rod can also throw a line a considerable
distance and I had no trouble casting 60 feet or more. The rod also
executes "roll casts" in an equally competent manner. While guiding a
"Wounded Warrior," who had never cast a fly rod, I traded off the
"guide rod" we provided for the New Zealand Dry fly rod model. He found
his casting to be so much improved that he did not want to go back to
the "guide rod."

Lines:

I tried several different lines from Airflo to Rio and found a normal "trout taper," such as a Rio Gold to work best for my casting style.

Fishing:

While I did not have the chance to land any fish larger than 14 inches,
I felt the rod could handle large fish with ease. Casting accuracy was
"dead on" and mending line was also very precise.

Recommendation:

I would definitely recommend the rod to anyone of any skill level and
my next rod purchase will be a New Zealand for sure.
