detdesc::It's a mistake to believe that steelhead only return to larger, broader rivers.  In fact, many large steelhead return to spawn in smaller streams and rivers each season.  In these waters, it's common that casting space is limited and to be successful, accurate casts are a requirement.  For this reason, we designed our British Columbia Drift Outfit.  Primarily designed to be the ultimate steelhead nymphing solution, we've found that this same outfit works great for single hand swinging, if the conditions allow.  Regardless, with the British Columbia Drift Outfit, you can efficiently and accurately get your fly on the mark with overhead and underhand casting techniques.  To compliment the stable and efficient rod taper, we use Airflo's Ridge Rangefinder fly line.  This unique fly line offers a longer weight-forward belly, which serves up smooth and powerful casts that deliver the fly exactly where you want it.  For physical and aesthetic balance, we've loaded this great casting line on our Leland Reel Co. Classic Drift fly reel.  Of course this reel is fully machined and anodized for a long life on the water, but more to the core, this reel looks like it was passed down from your angling mentor and soon to become a family heirloom.  Its simple, functional and adjustable click and pawl drag mechanism will surely slow any hard-running steelhead, while it's classic sound announces "Fish On!"

Leland Sonoma Coast 9'3" 7 Weight 4-piece Fly Fishing Outfit:

A brilliant and balanced outfit perfectly suited for bass, steelhead and large trout.

Efficiency is the secret of any well-crafted fly cast. A balanced fly fishing outfit, like the Leland Sonoma Coast, embodies this principle. Our rod, reel and fly line compliment one another and amplify your body's movement, transferring your effort through the fly rod and into the fly line. The results are casts that celebrate our sport by providing you with controlled distance, accuracy and a subtle presentation, all with astonishing ease.

Our Leland Sonoma Coast fly rod is designed to respond to the short, compact casting stroke we teach in our Leland Method casting classes. This 9'3" seven weight is exactly the right length and weight to not only efficiently deliver larger flies to bigger fish, but also control your drift. This particular fly rod is a nod to the past, when most fly anglers chose a single handed fly rod when chasing steelhead and larger trout. It allows for easy roll casts, when back cast room is limited, as well as super smooth overhead casts. This is a fly rod that would make your grandfather smile.

Adorned with our special Leland grip, the Sonoma Coast fly rod literally fits like a glove into your hand, adding intimacy that other fly rods often lack. Our intuitive grip provides you with added purchase and control of our already well-balanced fly rod. This rod is truly and extension of your body. Of course it's finished with all the right components, including our double-uplocking, anodized reel seat. Our non-glare blank finish combined with and our darkened guide set provides a stealthy approach when casting and fishing.

Fly lines too often are a secondary consideration. Not for us at Leland. We searched and tested high and low for the perfect fly line. Our goal was to find a fly line that blends casting efficiency and enjoyment with fishing function. After much research, casting, testing and frustrating results, we decided to embark on our own journey to design the best fly line. It took us a while, but we did our job. Our Leland British Columbia weight forward, seven-weight floating fly line (affectionately called the "Pliny" after our favorite beer) casts like butter and floats like a cork and very noticeably compliments the efficient taper of our Leland Sonoma Coast fly rod.

To store the perfect fly line, we obviously needed a fly reel. Again, we worked hard to design a fly reel that balanced correctly with our fly rod, both physically and aesthetically. The Leland Classic Drift fly reel is the answer. When combined with the Leland Coast fly rod and our fly line, the whole is much greater than the sum of parts. With an adjustable and proven click and pawl drag system, this fly reel nods to the great fly reels of the past, while employing better contemporary materials and manufacturing process, ensuring a fly reel that will last a lifetime. Your grandfather would approve of this reel's quality and he'd certainly approve of the celebratory sound it makes when your fish heads downstream.

Finally, you can store your balanced Leland Sonoma Coast fly fishing outfit handily in our nylon-covered rod tube. With its integrated, padded reel pouch, you can leave your Leland Classic Drift fly reel mounted proudly on your favorite big trout rod for easy storage and more importantly, quick rigging when it's time to hit the water.

January 7, 2011 (San Francisco, CA):  As a proud
sponsor, Leland Fly Fishing Outfitters is happy to finally announce the
availability of Skagit Master 2, Steelheading Outside the Box, featuring
Scott Howell.

Delivering the Goods:  Filmed in British Columbia and
Oregon, Skagit Master 2 is the most insightful technique-focused
steelhead film in over twenty years.  There are no indicators or dead
drifted nymphs in this film, only steelheading on the swing.  Whether
it’s dredging the depths with a custom-styled Intruder or popping a
foam-lipped Ska-opper over a rock garden run, Scott Howell gives you all
the information necessary to increase your odds of crossing paths with a
steelhead on a two-handed fly rod.

Read the full press release.

Film Overview

A compilation of a lifetime's worth of steelhead fishing experience
from one of the world's greatest steelhead guides, Skagit Master 2 is a
must-see for anyone interested in steelheading. From Skagit-style spey
casting, to finding and fishing the right water, to tying Scott's
innovative flies, this groundbreaking DVD contains many decades worth of hard-earned, on-the-water information available nowhere else.

Scott Howell is not a guy who just likes to go out there, listen to the water and call it a day.

He meticulously dissects each piece of water he fishes. His approach to
gear selection is practical, thoughtful, and straight-forward. This man
is a serious steelhead catching machine and Skagit Master 2 is the best look you will ever get into his world. Sponsored by Leland Fly Fishing Outfitters, Skagit Master 2 features several scenes shot by Leland's video department.

For the beginner just venturing into the rewarding world of steelhead
fly fishing, or the expert seeking to reach the next level of
“fishiness”, this is the best instructional video on fishing for steelhead with swung fly presentations.

Pro Review - Ben Paull

What’s the word. . .

Skagit Master 2, featuring Scott Howell, is the highly anticipated
sequel to the original Skagit Master 1, featuring Ed Ward.  Focused on
specialized swinging techniques that Scott has developed and perfected
over the years to effectively fish the good holding pockets, troughs,
buckets, and slots commonly passed up by anglers racing to the next
classic run, Skagit Master 2 truly lives up to its title, “Steelheading
Outside the Box.”  Scott Howell is a living legend, not only as a
steelhead fisherman and guide, but for his relentless drive for
innovation in a sport that was, for quite a while, confined to the use
of long belly lines on classic runs.   In Skagit Master 2, Scott
showcases his latest round of advancements and proves that rules truly
are meant to be broken.

Features. . .

Almost every one of this film’s 110 minutes is packed with insightful,
practical, on-the-water instruction from the man himself in real fishing
situations.  Covering cutting-edge techniques, Skagit Master 2 is all
swinging all the time – no nymphs or bobbers here!  While the film is
mainly focused on demonstrating techniques, there are also enough
hookups, topwater takes, and other fish porn sprinkled throughout to
keep viewers engaged.

From popping and chugging a Ska-opper across a choppy run on the North
Umpqua, to swinging a worm-weighted Prom Dress through deep honey
buckets in Oregon and British Columbia, this film shows you how to
change up your swinging techniques to effectively fish the places you
might have left for the nymph and gear guys.  Also much appreciated are
the high-speed tying segments revealing how Scott whips up some of the
custom flies he’s developed to match his innovative fishing techniques.

Overall Rating. . .

PROS – Chocked full of innovative techniques that will enlighten
and inspire anyone in the pursuit of chrome, plus 100% on-the-water
instruction (no lawn casting here), with great production and sound
quality.

CONS – Since some of the techniques Scott showcases are river or
region-specific, some steelheaders from other areas may disregard them
and miss the greater lesson of the film.  That, and the DVD does not
come with a custom drill vise!

BOTTOM LINE – Skagit Master 2 will undoubtedly change your
approach to steelheading.  Whether you fish the rivers that Scott does
or not, if you like fishing a swung fly to steelhead, this film will
not only add a whole new set of tactics to your arsenal, it will push
you to always try thinking outside the box the next time you are at the
vise, or on the water.
