Spring creeks are generally spring feed, slow moving, and gin clear. You begin searching through long green grass on the rivers bottom trying to discern the swimming movement of a trout from that of the grass. You spot your fish. You crouch down and cast your long leader up stream. It unravels perfectly. It seems like an eternity before the current pushes the fly down to the fish. The fish rises slowly to inspect your fly. I'm new to fishing spring creeks and two years ago, I had the chance to fish Silver Creek in Idaho. Not only was that one of the most beautiful bits of water I've ever been on...it was also one of the most challenging to fish, too. I had my standard five weight fly rod with me and struggled to make subtle presentations to the spooky fish. I watched a guy down stream from me catch several nice fish. I later spoke with him and he showed me what he was using. He had an older Sage Light Line 8'9" #3 fly rod. He said it was a great spring creek rod and he let me cast it. He was right. I could land the fly like it was a real bug. He then told me his rod was no long made by Sage. I hunted around online and found this Red Truck 8'9" #3 Spring Creek rod and figured Red Truck new something. I ended up ordering the whole outfit and last year found myself back on Silver Creek with this outfit. It worked perfectly. My long leaders and small flies landed on the water and I didn't spook the fish. I can say that I now understand that the right fly rod does make a difference...at least it does on spring creeks. Well done Red Truck.
