Leland Sonoma Instructor's Trout Fly Line, 5wt

The unique way we deliver our lure
(the fly) is the defining attribute of the sport of fly fishing.
Although we call this fly casting, the truth is...we are not at all
casting the fly. Instead, we are casting the fly line. To many, a fly
line is just a necessary component to go fly fishing. To us at
Leland, we believe the fly line should be the focal point, as we use
it to deliver our fly, mend our drift and land our fish. You bet the
right fly line is important.

Over the years, we've sold them all.
You name a fly line brand and series and we've probably carried it at
some point. Most big brand fly lines entice your interest with
performance and technology, promising longer, higher-line speed
casts. If your sole focus is distance, maybe a performance fly line
is right for you. But, if you actually fish...you might be interested
in our offering. We call it the Leland Pliny fly line. We named it
after our favorite Sonoma beer...Pliny The Elder...it's that good.

Our goals, when designing this fly
line, were efficiency and control. Our efficient fly line profile
better transfers your casting energy down the fly line and into the
leader, allowing you to cast with far less power and still get the desired
results. Our unique profile is certainly part of the secret. The
other part is our supple fly line. It forms smoother, more-efficient
loops than a contemporary, hard-coated fly line. On the water, this
softer fly line is less affected by micro currents...meaning, less
mending for you.

It gets better. Our shorter weight
forward section makes casting even easier. You only need to control
and cast the head. Include the leader and your rod length, and
the resulting cast is always forty feet. As any seasoned trout angler
knows, forty feet is the magic trout mark for casting. No longer are
you required to hold some 47 feet of fly line head in the air before
you can efficiently shoot the line. With our Pliny fly line, you'll
have easy access to the running line for effortless distance, should
you need it.

Our olive green fly line head blends
well with any brush-lined trout stream, offering you added stealth
when fishing educated trout. We even worked hard to minimize our fly
lines two welded loops. No more clunky casts and you still get super
easy rigging, too.

While developing this fly line, we
learned a thing or two we didn't expect. Not only is the fly line
perfect for anyone just getting into fly fishing for trout, it's a master angler's line, too. We also learned that a truly efficient
line works for all angling techniques. Whether dry fly, nymph or
streamer fishing, we learned it's not necessary for a
technique-specific fly line profile. All you need is an efficiently
designed fly line that loves to transfer energy down the fly line. As
the mass of the fly or rig increases, all you need to do is increase
the line mass...don't change the profile of the line.

All of us at Leland have been fishing
our Pliny line for the past two seasons and that's now all we use
when trout fishing. We certainly believe in it, but you don't have to
take our word...try it yourself. We'll ship you an efficient
Pliny and you give it a try. If it doesn't make casting more
enjoyable, efficient, controlled and accurate...just send it back and
we'll give you a full refund. We promise, this fly line will change
your fly fishing experience.

May 9, 2014 (Sonoma, CA):  As fly fishermen, nothing is more satisfying than exploring alpine trout streams with a backpack and the essentials. This classic pursuit deserves an equally classic rod, and after years of refinement, the result is Leland Rod Company's Sierra Nevada Backpacker Outfit. A tribute to the wilderness regions we love and their native trout, the Backpacker is a compact, balanced outfit in a class all its own.

Back to Basics: 9ft 5wt's have there place, as do some all-around rods, but it's not in the high country of the Sierra Nevada Range. The Sierra Series is a select line of rods, reels, & lines crafted for places where hiking boots come before wading boots and wild trout aren't measured by their size. The Backpacker outfit exemplifies the essence of the series with its compact construction and an emphasis on performance and portability. The outfit as a whole is well balanced and extremely fun, but it also pays homage to the origins of fly fishing tradition and tackle.

The Rod: No detail went unaddressed in the design of the Sierra Nevada Backpacker fly rod. At 7' 6'' in length, it casts easily on tighter waters, and as a 4-weight, it provides enough power for range of flies efficiently. The 5-piece construction makes easy work of carrying it in your backpack, regardless of the miles you plan to travel. Then there's the craftsmanship: top notch componentry and timeless design make for a rod that looks as good as it performs. Agate stripping guides, a darkened nickel-silver slide-band reel seat crafted around a cut of cork impregnated with Cocobolo wood; premium cork that complements the custom Leland grip. It's all inside the durable and compact aluminum rod tube.

Sierra Nevada Reel & Fly Line: Perfectly suited in size and style is the Leland Sierra Nevada Golden Trout Reel. This click-pawl throwback is suited for any 3-4 weight, but it shines on the Sierra Series rods. It's a time-honored and tough little reel with solid brass components. Throw in the Leland Sierra Nevada Backpacker WF 4wt fly line, and you have a truly custom designed outfit.

The Rundown:  Every piece of this outfit was designed for small stream success: Sierra Nevada fly rod, fly reel, & fly line, all developed by Leland in honor of one of our favorite places to fish. You won't find a more thoughtfully crafted and fun outfit anywhere but here.

Pro Review - Leland's Burke White

Often overlooked, a quality fly line is a necessary component to truly enjoy the sport of fly fishing. Think about it, it's the vehicle for delivering our fly to the mark. We touch it every second we're fishing and it's the obvious connection between us anglers and our fish. You bet the right fly line is important.

Today, most brands of fly lines focus on performance with stiffer, micro-textured coatings and super-low-stretch cores, available in a confusing myriad of tapers. Now if you're all about performance, best defined as: higher line speed, tighter loops and longer casts...maybe these lines are right for you.

At Leland, we still remember the fun lines of yesteryear, with softer coatings that resulted is butter-smooth, efficient, well-shaped loops. With our Leland fly lines, you can come off the casting accelerator and instead of blasting out an ultra-fast loop of hardened fly line, you can relax (and with lower line speed), lay out a beautifully controlled loop of fly line...accurately.

With lower line speed and a softer-coated fly line, you'll have more control, you'll be more accurate and your fly will land more naturally. In our eyes, that's really what fly fishing is all about. Of course there's advanced technology in our fly lines, but to be honest...we're getting tired of all the materials hype. These are just great fly lines to cast and fish.

Beyond smooth, enjoyable, efficient casts, we've applied our thirty years of fly fishing retail to design an offering of fly lines that map to the most common fly fishing situations. Whether you fish for tiny trout in micro-creeks, prefer to cast only dry flies, nymph or streamers, we've got the right fly line for you, designed to present your particular fly or rig with ease and function. No more confusion!

If you want to get back to what fly fishing is all about, if you want to efficiently control your fly line, if you want to be more accurate and earn fish, instead of just catching fish, maybe our Leland fly lines are right for you.
